Bill Van Hoek and 18 others were naturalized in Bakersfield with Judge Robert B. Lambert presiding. The group includes residents from Argentina China Czechoslovakia the Dutch East Indies England France Germany Korea Mexico Republic of China the Philippines and Portugal. A civil defense meeting for service chiefs is set for Friday at City Hall to plan emergency action and recruit volunteers including women’s groups and Junior Women’s Club members.
Three terms expire in March 1963 for William Siemens Loran S Grant and Alex Cherna baeff. Nominations due by December 15 1962 filed with Kern County. Directors serve four years and meet monthly at the District office. Incumbents volunteer in agricultural improvements without compensation.
Mr and Mrs Hatton H Tate celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Church of Christ in Shafter. More than eight friends and relatives attended as their children Jess Tate led the event and flowers were exchanged. Out of town guests included Mr and Mrs Dan Tate of Stockton and Mr and Mrs E E Freman of Wasco.
Long Beach Contra Costa meets Contra Costa College in the 15th Shrine Potato Bowl at Bakersfield Memorial Stadium on December 1. The Beach are undefeated with a string of decisive wins while Contra Costa College also holds an unblemished record in the Golden Gate Conference. Tickets remain available through H. W. Pat Kelly at Kelly and Somers Insurance on James Street.
Kern Opera Theatre opens a festival season with Verdi La Traviata on November 29 at Harvey Auditorium and Hoffmann on February 15 and 16. Season tickets save ten percent and are sold through Hobby Shop. The star-studded cast features Lucille Lavender as Violetta and a renowned tenor leading Tales of Hoffmann.
Monday night Shafter City Council discussed the annual city audit and Ruggenberg’s recommendations. Topics included flag displays by the city, a proposed DMV office bid by E B Stringham, and an insurance survey led by H W Pat Kelly with local coverage questions raised by Mayor Gaede. Reports due December 10 include the insurance survey and other items from the session.

Residents are told that the special election on annexation will be held December 18 after an error in the January 3 date. City Attorney cites a Tuesday rule. December 18 is the only feasible date. Polling place: 459 West Euclid, Sarah Bergman residence. Poll hours: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Eight local students enroll for fall at Tabor College Hillsboro Kansas including John Enns Sharon Janzen Stan Loewen Lorin Neufeld Jeanne Reimer Dale Siemens Dick Unruh and Rodney Wiens. Tabor reports total enrollment 388 students for the year. Dick Unruh elected vice class officer.
Local football fans may attend a post season film showing of General's games from the past season. The program starts at 7 30 p m at the Veterans Memorial Hall with no admission charge.
The California Farm Bureau Federation board approved making the Policy Resolution Book available to members on request. Chairman Frick urged greater member awareness of the organization's policy, noting many do not know it. A summary of 80 policy statements from San Diego is on Page 4.
