Four Men arraigned in Shafter Court on DUI and revoked licenses

In Shafter Judicial Court four men faced arraignment this week. Ether Brisco of 141 E. plead guilty to drink driving. Brown received 110 dollar fine and five days for prior convictions. Anders fined 56 dollars as first offense. Melvin White of Fresno fined 110 dollars plus five days in jail. five days required by law on second or subsequent conviction. One business partner had previously pled guilty and paid 105 dollars.

Arrest of Juveniles Clears Car Thefts

Three Shafter youths ages 14 to 16 were taken into custody early Tuesday, clearing a string of local auto thefts. Officer Earl O’Brien spotted a red Corvette and blue El Camino at Cherry Avenue drag strip after linking them to a theft reported by Bill Mande. The suspects led police to a third youth, later taken into custody, and all were transported to juvenile hall in Bakersfield.

Rotary Club to Provide Books for Dictionary Project

The Shafter Rotary Club voted at its Tuesday meeting to assist dictionaries or Books of Knowledge for a literacy program. Russell White spoke on Africa where he has spent many years. Clarence Neuman was announced as speaker for December 11, and the next meeting will be the annual Christmas party.

Art Festival Plans Told By Committee

Plans completed for the 15th annual art contest set for March 28 to April 1. District 1 chairman Miss Bernie Morris says the event will be at Shafter Veterans Memorial Hall with entries from Richland and Lerdo elementary and Shafter high and Buttonwillow elementary. New District 12 includes Wasco Lost Hills Maple and Semi Tropic with Shirley Amaro as chair. Judging groups cover kindergarten through sixth grade.

Fire Claims Leon Ramey in Early Monday Tragedy

Leon Ramey aged 56 of 877 Central Valley highway died in a fire that gutted his small wood frame home shortly after midnight. Neighbors Joe and Mrs. Hill reported discovering the blaze and attempting to reach Ramey who was found unconscious on his bed. The cause is undetermined with heaters or discarded cigarette possible factors. this marks Kern County’s 11th fire fatality of the year.

Shafter Youth Roark Trains With 505th in Mainz Maneuver

Army Pvt. Forest W. Roark of Shafter participated with the 6th Division's 505th Infantry in a four day Germany maneuver to test unit combat effectiveness. He entered service in March 1962, trained at Ford Ord and arrived overseas last September. The 1962 Shafter High School graduate is 18.
