Farm Service Burglary Triggers Check Scam Warning

Merchants alerted after the Shafter Farm Service was burglarized early Tuesday. Deputies report a safe with $20, several hundred dollars in checks and about 500 blank checks stolen, intended to be filled later. Owners Noble and T. J. Howze say thieves forced entry by tearing a metal door and removing a window and also carried off many tires.

Shafter City Council Rejects Waste Collection Takeover Offer

The Shafter City Council declared satisfaction with its garbage and waste collection service and rejected J. C. Cook of Springfield Oregon’s offer to take over the utility for an annual fee. Officials said the department funds itself and is well run with only occasional resident complaints.

Flu season dents donors at Shafter blood drive

The Shafter blood collection drive drew only 28 eligible donors as flu season reduced turnout. Jack Janzen, drive chairman, said Bakersfield bloodbank sent the vehicle to replenish local plasma stocks. The visit, with Dr. Henry Voth and nurse Mrs. Jake F. Bergen aiding, included donuts and coffee provided by the Business and Professional club and served by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Housing at Minter Village to continue occupancy

Kern County Housing Authority says Minter Village will keep 146 units with 265 residents since eight damaged barracks are not repairable. Officials deny eviction plans and plan sale only if necessary while maintaining low cost housing for families.

Cotton Harvest in Shafter Nears End Amid Record Yields

California cotton harvest ends next week with prices 33 to 38 cents and yields up to 2.5 to 3 bales per acre in Shafter. West coast weather favorable, south and southeast poor, total Kern County harvest about two to two and a quarter bales per acre statewide around 1006 pounds. Shafter-Wasco area to produce nearly 75 million pounds with 42 million pounds shipped. Local gins run 24 hours daily as finish nears.

Chamber to Name Directors for 58

The Shafter chamber of commerce and agriculture will meet next Wednesday morning to nominate new directors for 1958. Secretary Robert Somers announced the officers will be chosen after the directors’ election later in December.

Free Polio Shots Here Next Friday Night

Immunizations for poliomyelitis will be given at the County Building in Shafter on Friday, November 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. Anyone over six months of age is eligible. Doctor William Buss notes shots are best now as polio season peaks mid summer and urges vaccination at private physicians or health department clinics to reduce cases in Kern County.

Stores to Remain Open Nights for Christmas Season

Christmas shoppers in the Shafter area may shop evenings as merchants extend hours. The merchants division will keep stores open until 8 p m from December 16 to 21, until 9 p m on December 23, and close at 6 p m on Christmas Eve to accommodate workers.
