Scott Frost, one of harness racing's greatest trotters, is retired due to a hind leg injury. The Camp stable plans stud service in California and has added two yearlings Brogue Hanover and Meadow Alley Adios to its stable after recent purchases in Harrisburg.
The Shafter-Wasco Irrigation District announced 3999 tax notices were issued at a rate of 2 per 100 of land value for 1958. Assessments apply only to land. homes and crops are not taxed. First-half taxes due December 30. Water delivery for next spring aimed at 50 000 acre feet. Also reports winter potato processing starting next week with several sheds in Shafter and Wasco. Prices for USIA spuds expected between 2.60 and 3.10 per cwt.
Funeral services for Jack Henry Akman age 45 of Shafter were held at Robert L. Jones Funeral Home Wasco with Rev. Fred Harp officiating. Akman was killed in an automobile crash on Kimber lina Road on Thursday November 14th. He was a World War II veteran native of Ray Oklahoma and survived by his widow Margaret Altman two sons a stepson two daughters his mother and several siblings. Interment followed at Shafter Cemetery.
USC assistant football coach Mel Hein will be guest speaker at Shafter High School December 3 for the Annual Civic Sportsmanship banquet. Tickets are sold by service clubs, with committee members listed. Entertainment by the SHS string ensemble directed by Irvin Jensen.
The 70 piece Richland Orchestra under director Nick Southwick presented a morning concert for Di Giorgio School students and an afternoon assembly at Sunset School in the Vineland District. Plans are being made to provide the group more appearances during the school year.
Police seek suspects after nine volleyball nets were ripped during the weekend at Richland School. No injuries reported and investigation ongoing.
Two weekend burglaries were reported in Shafter including Reuben Dirksen's garage at 164 Central Valley Highway where $30 in change and a new auto battery were stolen. Entry was through a window. Larry Brigante's Steak House at 185 Central Avenue lost $153.10 in cash and $34.10 in checks after a side door lock was pried. Charles Henry's car at 519 Sunset was driven away then found abandoned near Madera and Shafter avenues.
The Press changes publication to Wednesday next week to align with weekend ads in Shafter stores. Local merchants provide early deadlines for advertising copy as the paper shifts to Wednesday home delivery. Starting with the Thanksgiving edition, all deadlines move permanently with church, society and club news due by 4 PM Monday and classified ads due by Tuesday noon.
The Press offers a dozen giant daffodil bulbs with a one year subscription renewed or started in November. Subscribers must act before month end to receive the bulbs.
Shafter police report a wave of fake checks during the Christmas season. Assistant Chief Hanley Witcher cites 11 cases from local merchants who were conned by passers using a non existent Jack Lundeer Construction Company and a check protector. He urges strict verification, avoiding pencil checks, juvenile issuers, and missing endorsements, especially with counter checks.
The Shafter Recreation program reports 108,608 total attendance for the year ending fall, up from 99,523 the prior year. Roy Farrell notes new programs and a baseball league for teens helped reach an all time attendance high. program funding comes from city, county, school districts and the Community Chest.
Paramount Manufacturing Company restarts its Shafter branch to handle full potato operations. Oliver Teer oversees service and installations while Bert Leigh conducts experiments on new machines. Jerry Oehme manages sales with growers. Main Stockton office serves the southern San Joaquin Valley.
Motorists in Shafter were reminded they could obtain drivers licenses on Tuesdays. Gene Naughton, a drivers license examiner, holds sessions at City Hall from 8:30 to 4:30 with Marian Ledbetter of Bakersfield as his clerk.
A mother Maude Louise Perkins aged 30 and her infant Mary Ann Perkins were buried after a Lerdo highway auto crash that also injured A H Bryant of Shafter, six year old Thomas H Perkins Jr and his father Thomas. Rev Melvin Krug officiated the Arm strong Mortuary service with burial at Shafter Cemetery. The collision occurred when Thomas Perkins 31, drove into Bryant’s car. Survivors include widower Thomas, the mother Mrs Mary Elizabeth Hendrix of Minter Village, siblings Walter, Thomas, Donna Susann Jackson, Katherina Jane Perkins and several brothers and sisters living in Oklahoma, Minter Village, Antioch and Iowa.
George Haberfelde Inc constructs four new car showrooms at 219 Central Avenue on former Ford service station land. A rear blacktopped used car lot accompanies the sales space, with occupancy due by year’s start. Dari Delight drive-in planned on Central Valley Highway south of Laverty’s, built by Arthur Fike on Hudson property. Fike is Irvin E. Fike’s brother, Shafter Chrysler-Plymouth dealer.
