Shafter Generals capped the regular season with a 31 19 victory over arch rival Wasco, boosting their surge toward the playoffs. Coach Mike Reese praised the effort and noted a hard hitting rematch awaits Taft in Shafter, as Taft seeks revenge for their lone defeat.
The Shafter Generals host the Taft Wildcats in a long running rivalry dating to 1950 with 14 wins each and one scoreless 1968 game. Taft leads in all time points 520 to 555, average 37 per game, and a 7:30 p.m. playoff date on November 26 in Shafter with bands performing at halftime and lifetime CIF pass holders exempt from ticket rules.
Longtime Shafter pastor and 25 year First Southern Baptist lay leader Rev. Wilcoxon, 86, of Bakersfield, died after a rear collision on Ming Avenue off Highway 99 during a pre holiday traffic snarl. He had served since 1938, helped found the Southern California Baptist movement, retired in 1965, and later served as associate pastor at First Southern in Oildale. Also killed later the same day was Rev. Ted Mouser, a former Shafter pastor. Funeral details were unavailable as Mish Funeral Home handles arrangements.
The Society of Distinguished American High School Students selected three Shafter High School students Regina Westbrook Jerry Keeley and Kim Coodey and one Wasco Union High School student Sharon Sharp for the class ending June 1982. Nominees are chosen by sponsors for outstanding academics extracurriculars or civic work. Sponsor Tom Hammett of Shafter received a National Appreciation Award for dedicated support of the society.
Shafter High School FFA hosts a post game barn dance on November 26 to kick off Toys for Tots in a community service drive. Admission is free with a toy donation. other toys collected go to designated agencies for distribution to needy children this Christmas.
Evers Virginia Evers, 65, was awarded 300000 in a lump sum settlement by a Kern County Superior Court jury after a December 1, 1980 traffic crash at Seventh Standard and Allen Roads. The verdict, reached on November 16 after over a week of deliberation, cited compassion for injuries to older people.
