Shafter Students Dominate Kern County Academic Decathlon
Four Shafter High School students earned top honors at the Third Annual Kern County Academic Decathlon held November 20 at Bakersfield West High. Gail Monk won scholastic speech and tied for second in English and literature while tied for third in fine arts. Curt Rolff took first in varsity math, Steve Thurlen was second in varsity biology, and Susan Carter placed second in the honor division social science. Shafter’s team, coached by Nichols, joined about 200 competitors from 24 high schools in a day of tests in English, fine arts, sciences, math, social science, career education, and essay writing. The county championship was won by High West, with Burroughs second and Desert third. the Super Quiz was won by Burroughs and North tied for third. Plaques and team trophies were awarded at West High Nov. 20.
