Shafter Police Survey Recommends Seven Speed Limit Changes

The Shafter Police Department completed an 11 year traffic survey of fifteen sites using radar on 100 vehicles per site. Chief Richard Hoffer urged changes at eight sites stay the same, six reduced, and one increased, with enforcement starting November 22 after signs and legal steps.

Chamber float wins Sweepstakes in Bakersfield parade

The Shafter Chamber of Commerce float won the Sweepstakes Award for best float and a Special Award for outstanding effort after outperforming 17 entrants in the Bakersfield Veterans Day Parade. Joe Kirk and Bud Johnson led construction and salvage efforts for the 1959 Edsel themed float, aided by Sperling Tire’s donated tire after a setback en route.

Secret Witness Program Reactivated by Shafter Police

Shafter Press and Shafter Police renew the Secret Witness Program to involve the public in solving crimes. Informants remain anonymous, with code names published in the Press. rewards offered upon arrest. Two Halloween 1982 burglaries cited with losses totaling $9,136.

Second Annual Shafter Turkey Trot Set At Richland Jr High

The Second Annual Shafter Recreation and Park District Turkey Trot will be held Tuesday November 23 at Richland Junior High Playground. Open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14, with registration starting at 3:00 p.m. The event features three divisions and a $1 registration fee. First place earns a $10 meat certificate, second $7.50, third $5.00. For details contact the district office or Mike Anderson or Jim Rude at Richland Junior High.

At last night’s Richland School District meeting trustees examined California Assessment Program results. Third graders perform similarly to comparable districts in reading and math while sixth graders lag in all three areas. minorities and limited English students are prominent and mobility is high.

The Shafter Historical Society plans May Festival hours after depot dedication. Roof repairs funded by the Arkelian Foundation, grounds landscaping, and track lay for a railroad car exhibit prep the site. A 1900 caboose may join the boxcar. donations include Bill Siemens' Indian artifacts. Shafter High School and North High School run Operation Christmas Tree 82, a door to door fund drive selling Douglas firs and Noble firs on a pre order basis. A $5 deposit reserves a tree or decorations with balances due at pickup December 10 11 or 12.
