Shafter citizens face a holiday as most stores and banks close on Thanksgiving with limited meals away from home. The State theater opens at 2:30 p.m. for matinees and the Del Kern drive-in plans a Thursday schedule. local churches observe a day of tribute with one service at Congregational church.
John Henry Dirksen 66 of Shafter died Saturday in a local hospital after a short illness. He was born May 25 1890 in Napoleon North Dakota and moved to the area in 1919. Dirksen was a self employed carpenter and active in the Seventh Day Adventist church since 1922. He is survived by three brothers Pete Paul and Sam all of Shafter three sisters Mrs Sarah Richards Mrs Kate Jensen and Mrs Eva Unruh and two grandchildren.
Shafter California potatoes feature in a national ABC promotional campaign co operated by Santa Fe Railway. The two films titled Great Potato Race star 12 year old Tommy Davis and will be shown six times over the next year across 15 million homes on 94 stations with repeats planned.
Hundreds of Shafter residents will wear miniature white canes as the Lions club conducts its annual drive to fund sight conservation. The money will aid the blind and buy glasses for needy children. Booths will be set in town locations with Blue Bird group assistance, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The goal is $226, $45 more than last year. Helpful volunteers include Aith Maquist, Elmer Mettler, and Reg Hammond.
A total of $3,331.50 has been received toward the $9,612.00 Community Chest budget, campaign chairman Jack Thompson reported Tuesday. Remaining funds are expected after block workers complete follow ups to letters sent to business firms, with redirections on schedule.
George Love son of Mr and Mrs Huel Benton Love Box 1184 Shafter is a member of the Bakersfield College basketball team. Gil Bishop head coach announced. Love played forward at Shafter High and was voted the most valuable high school letterman. He letters in class C KB and two years varsity. He graduated in 1955 and plans to transfer to Fresno State College after Bakersfield. He aims to coach high school basketball after Fresno State.
Shafter three basketball teams begin the 1956-57 season with inter school practice games at Arvin on Friday November 30. Shafter A meets Wasco on December 7 while B and C squads face Taft. Corcoran tilts were canceled raising questions on league standings as Exeter Garces Wasco set eight league games. Shafter opens league play at home against Exeter Jar 4 with most home games at 530 p.m. Moroski notes practice starts this week.
Tickets go on sale for the 10th annual Sportsmanship Banquet to be held December 11 at the Shafter High School Cafetorium. Johnson is general chairman. Tickets available from committee members, Central Hardware, and Kelly and Shemers Insurance. The event is organized by the civic and service groups in the Shafter community.
Tech Shafterites have been nominated for membership on the Shafter community committee of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for 1957. Persons may submit zonal nominations next Thursday by offering 100 names of eligible candidates to the chairman Iter E Nicolao. The following are listed: Kermeth van Antares John Balz Keey Belt Jake F Bergen R. Bobst John Enns Ralph Lachenmaier Wallace Reimer Menno Siemens and Paul Wiebe.
The Richland Junior Farmers seek farm animals for projects including chickens rabbits hogs lambs or calves and accept discarded farm implements or equipment like feeder troughs and coops. Pets such as dogs or cats are not eligible and donations should contact Julius Black at near 6-4924.
Chairman Pat Kelly announced the Ninth Annual Potato Bowl will be Stockton College versus Orange Coast College on December 1 at Memorial Stadium. The Kern County Shrine Club sponsor and school presidents Burke Bradley and Dr Hi Peterson confirmed selections. The board aimed to match representative Northern and Southern California junior college teams.
Shafter city and county fire departments launch a porchlight campaign on Wednesday November 28. Residents may leave porch lights on from 6 to 9 p.m. to guide firemen collecting for muscular dystrophy. Ed Wimpyender chairs the drive with Capt. L F Cornelius as co chair. The goal is $100.
The Shafter Generals beat Exeter 40 to 24 to finish tied for the South Sequoia championship with Corcoran. Key scores came from Paul Scott es and Taylor, with strong defense at the six yard line and a 79 yard march sparked by Herman Jones. The title playoff flip was held at Shafter with Corcoran, and the teams will meet in Sanger.
Enrollment figures at 756 Salon climbed to 804 on the present count, surpassing any previous opening day totals. The 1955 opening enrollment was 693 with freshmen at 268, sophomores 247, juniors 164, and seniors 125. boys outnumbered girls 415 to 389.
