Richland district approves choir trip and school work plan

Richland School District board approved a junior high choir trip to Sierra Pacific Middle Schools and Lincoln High School in Stockton on April 23 and 24 after planning two-day assignments. The trip, invited by Lincoln’s Gary Wright, aims to raise about $1,000 via a Sing-A-Thon on February 7 with pledges. The board also approved Omega Construction’s low bid of 1,397,957 for primary and intermediate school reconstruction plus 250,698 for furnishings. A December 4–5 state compliance review was outlined, with results on December 5, and annexation talks with Lerda postponed to the December 1 meeting chaired by newly elected Cliff Ford.

City hires new police officers in Shafter meeting

Shafter City Council held a special session on November 11 to approve emergency hiring for two vacant police positions. City Administrator Wade McKinney said the measure could speed intake as Police Chief Frank Christensen reported vacancies filled by week’s end. A Taft police chief’s move to Shafter as sergeant was noted. Public comment covered a licensing issue on Lerdo Highway and a zone change. A stag gered terms ordinance for DPBIA was slated for a future hearing. Public Works Director John Guinn announced sharp water test results. See Council Page Twelve.

Shafter Recreation and Park District Hears SRPD Plans

Four board members met November 12 to retain the law firm for six months over a pending MOU with Kern County Economic Opportunity Corporation and an agreement with Kern High School District. Attorney Terry Foley discussed litigation in Shafter Citizens Action Group vs KHSD. Public session followed. chair Toni Johnston presiding. SRPD cited higher utilities at the W C Walker Center and seeks renegotiation.

Hart Wins First Humanitarian Award From UA Alumni

Leo B. Hart, longtime Kern County educator and former County Superintendent of Schools, received a new humanitarian honor from the University of Arizona Alumni Association. The 101-year-old program at Weedpatch School, built to serve migrant children, reflects Hart's lasting impact on education, including his pioneering counseling system and pre registration efforts. Hart, born in Brandon Iowa, survived illness and war, returning to Arizona to complete a master’s and then influence Bakersfield schools and migrant families. The award was presented by Arizona alumni with Hart’s wife Edna and family in attendance. Special guests included former Delta Chi president and local friends.
