The Shafter Swimming Club proposes a six thousand dollar improvement to the Richland Ke mme university aquatic center to expand use beyond swimming. The club will finance about one third and the Richland School board studies funding options as plans progress.

Petition Seeks Separation of Shafter High from Kern Union

A petition to detach Shafter High School from the Kern Union High School District gathered about 800 signatures this week. The drive was initiated by Boel and Bud Johnson and circulated by American Legion Auxiliary workers on November 3, the day of the 1970 general election, with early progress noted.

Wild car crash drives into bedroom at Harris Drive

A 17 year old Shafter youth lost control of a car and rammed into a home at 572 Harris Drive, pushing a swing set into a bedroom. The car hit a fence and a house trailer before stopping. The driver was hospitalized in shock and a 14 year old Shafter girl was taken into custody for curfew violation and drunkenness.

Monsignor Pointek Takes Lead at St. Therese Shafter Parish

Monsignor Francis J. Pointek arrived in Shafter last week and assumed the pastorate of St. Therese Catholic Church. He moves from Los Banos replacing Rev. Patrick Breslin, now at St. Catherine’s in Dinuba. Born 1913 in Wilkes-Barre, he entered the priesthood in Worthington Ohio and was ordained in 1940 for the Monterey Fresno Diocese.

Allan Johnson Transferred to Lindsay Bank Branch

Allan Johnson assistant bank manager moves from Shafter to Lindsay to oversee the Lindsay Branch of Bank of America. He has spent three years at Shafter and previously worked in Watsonville, Pacific Grove, Modesto, and at the San Francisco headquarters. Johnson is a University of Idaho graduate with a master’s degree and served two years in the Army.

Shafter Week Sees Freezing 32 As Temperatures Fluctuate

A week in Shafter shows seasonal warmth with a high of 82 on Saturday November 14 and a low of 32 during the night of Friday November 13. Daytime highs reached 66 on November 11 and again on November 13, while soil temps ranged from 60 to 53 at the U S Cotton Research Station.

Plans Form For 1970 Shafter Christmas Festival Fair

Shafter merchants and the Junior Women's Club announce the second annual Christmas Festival Fair to be held December 3–4 in Shafter Memorial Hall. General chairwoman Mrs Kay Crosby leads a growing committee with sub panels for booths, displays, and events. Highlights include merchant booths, an outdoor auto display, fashion shows, free drawings, Santa arrival, and a snack bar. The fair opens Thursday at 5 p.m. and runs to 9 p.m., with Friday hours from 10 a.m. to late evening culminating in a grand prize drawing at 8 p.m. Public tickets will be sold at Memorial Hall and participating merchants.
