A letter from Ralph Moody of the Pacific Fruit and Produce Co. debunks the myth that Shafter potatoes spoil, showing a Shafter tuber stored in Cheyenne remained blemish free and in good condition. The sample proves Shafter spuds will keep as well as other tubers or longer.
Representatives of the American Horti cultural Institute depart for Washington to confer with federal officials on permanent removal of crop surpluses. H. C. Merritt Jr and James Mills Jr join D. Gould Bowley of the institute to assess current legislation and possible new measures.
W. E. Haag of Rio Bravo was elected president of the Kern County Farm Bureau at a Bakersfield meeting. A. Heimforth became vice president and T. M. Martin secretary treasurer. Eckmann named to cotton department and director at large with Shellabarge Green Alwoos Hinries. Membership drive targeted over 500 county families.
Avenal High’s moleskin team, tied for the Shasta division Sierra League lead in its first year, travels to Shafter for a 2:15 p.m. Saturday post season clash. The heavily favored Avenal meets a Shafter squad winless this season but capable of flashes of brilliance, coached by Bill White.
County Assessor Tom Burke told Shafter Business Men's Association 30 of California's 66 oil fields lie in Kern County. Burke spoke on assessment and tax matters while W H Jahant served as luncheon speaker, outlining local fiscal details.
Arthur Huston, 22, of Buttonwillow, said two unidentified men tried to block his car on the Taft highway between Rio Bravo schoolhouse and Seventh Standard road at 8 15 p m on Monday. A shot fired by one man punctured a left rear hub cap while another bullet hit the running board. Huston described the bandit as about 5 feet 11 inches, 160 pounds, 20 to 30, driver unknown, car unlicensed. Constable Reily briefed sheriff on the incident and a radio broadcast followed. The motive remains unclear and Huston doubts the attack.
John R. Quinn served as guest speaker at the Exchange Club addressing members about community service and civic engagement, recounting his experiences as a Delano resident and public figure.
Government sets potato acreage goal for the 1938 agricultural conservation program between 3.1 million and 3.3 million acres. Kern county named a commercial producer area while California's national quota and county allotments await determination. Payments depend on farm yields, with six cents per bushel for early varieties and varying late-potato rates. Growers should follow Kern County Agricultural Conservation association rules.

Mr. Baughman went to Visalia with his wife and two children. He then proceeded to Fresno while his wife and children visited Mr. and Mrs. H. Kileinhans, the parents of Mrs. Baughman.
Union Oil Company workers rush a connecting pipe line from the Shafter discovery well to the Rio Bravo pumping station three miles away. Storage tanks are rising fast but tests show they may be inadequate for the crude, which is flowing at 1400 barrels daily. The well will stay shut until storage is ready.
A May 1930 Associated Press dispatch from Los Angeles reports the Shafter oil field as possibly the world's greatest discovery. Union Oil officials and expert geologists, including Earl B Noble, call it the most important California find since Kettleman Hills with potential to become a major producer.
The Shafter market shows activity as D. O. Moore, owner of a local gin, holds his current property with no planned improvements. Simon Mettler and family move into a ranch home recently acquired from Ed Becker, located about a mile and a half southwest of town.
Sheriff Champness renews resolve to rid Kern County of undesirables including professional gamblers peddlers racketeers and itinerant sellers. He urges deputies and area police to cooperate in the campaign noting the county as a state hot spot for criminals during the coming season.
Union Oil has leased the corner lot on Santa Fe Street near Central and will build a super service station. Local trucker Ed Friessen plans to lease and operate the station. Excavation for gasoline tanks is complete and the buildings are being fabricated to be erected within a fortnight. Foundations will be laid this week.
The city need not purchase costly road equipment to maintain streets. County equipment can be used, or the county road crew employed by the city if desired. Delano and other county cities use similar arrangements, according to The Press.
Union Oil’s Kernco No. 134, three miles south of Shafter, flowed 2400 barrels daily from 55 feet of Vedder sand at 11,240 to 11,302 feet during a constricted test. Gas was light at 625,000 cubic feet daily, with potential output higher if the well opened wide. The discovery marks one of the deepest producing wells, prompting storage planning for high gravity crude.
Shafter onion growers are busy transplanting sets into field rows with many planting crews in work. The acreage may exceed earlier expectations as satisfactory seed beds produced a good supply of sets. Sets are being brought in district wide and planting continues through December.
Funeral services for Cornelius Thomas, longtime Shafter resident, were conducted Sunday afternoon at the German Seventh Day Adventist church with Rev. J. H. Tindall and Jacob Isaac officiating. Interment followed in Shafter cemetery. Janzen Funeral Home handled arrangements. Thomas died Saturday morning at his parents home, aged 48, after years of ill health. A quartet sang hymns during the service. pallbearers included H. L. Weishaar, J. H. Ratzlaff, A. J. Schultz, Henry Kroeker, C. C. Duerksen and A. E. Buller. He is survived by his wife, parents, brother Fred of Shafter, and sisters Lydia and Mrs. D. P. Harder.
Eight carloads of Shafter grapes left by rail this week for Kansas City markets. The 1937 season total reaches 22 carloads, surpassing 1936 figures.
L. M. Sands, sealer of weights and measures, reports 264 calls in October. He inspected 193 scales, condemned 22, adjusted and sealed 35, and inspected 128 measuring pumps.
