The Shafter Public Utility District awarded the sewer system and disposal plant contract to Sutalo and Balmjack of Los Angeles for 44 266.70 dollars. Construction will start after PWA approval next week with 27 000 dollars grant funding and bond proceeds covering the rest.
Double funeral services for Henry H. Duerksen Jr. and Ralph Peters, two Shafter youths killed in a motor car accident, were held at Mennonite Brethren church with ministers Wm J Bestwater and Alfred T Chandler officiating. Survived by wife Sylvia a daughter Velma Lou Payne three brothers H C Payne M D Payne John Payne and sister Celia Hubbard. Born December 24 1900 in Newton Arkansas he moved to California last year settling in North Shafter.
A Friday night intersection collision at Poplar avenue and Santa Fe street injured Abe Unruh 20 dislocating three vertebrae and left him bedridden at home. Anice Ratzlaff 19 wasuninjured. George Miller 45 Wasco driver of the other car was charged with drunken driving and bodily harm and jailed after sobriety tests. released on bail Saturday and to face trial.
