Shafter district gins run at near capacity with 340 bales daily and 6 500 bales season total. Crows Camp-West-Lowe and Shafter-Wasco plants report 130 to 145 and 100 to 110 bales daily with season totals 2 753 and 1 400 respectively. Labor trouble reversal brings wage gains and adequate picker supply as trailers fill and machinery runs 24 hours.
General Petroleum reports progress in the Shafter field with Van Ness No. 4 at 10 800 feet and Wagner No. 3 at 8583 feet. The Van Ness No. 3 derrick is erected but activity slows while No. 4 proceeds and equipment moves to No. 8. The company remains the only operator in the area with multiple active projects though no new locations or future plans have been released.
Mayor Phil Ohanneson proclaims Armistice Day a city holiday in Shafter to honor Americans who died or served in the war ending the conflict, urging proper observance by all citizens.
Members of Leslie L. Robinson Post No. 213 American Legion favored observing Armistice Day in Shafter with store closures, per Mayor Channeson's proclamation though no effort to close businesses will be made. They also discussed building a Legion clubroom and lounge, with ongoing planning. Junior Past Commander Pete Bender received a $20 gold past commander's pin in appreciation for last year’s work with the Shafter children’s Christmas party.
The Shafter city council postponed an adjourned meeting planned for Monday because City Engineer Althouse and Los Angeles expert Mr Monroe could not present. Monroe brings 25 years in street improvement management to discuss procedure. both may attend the regular meeting next week to report progress.
Sunday noon fire at the D. C. Moore gin on Shafter highway south of town damaged 30 bales of cotton and caused about 1500 dollars in losses. Fire was started by boys playing with matches. Firefighters and forestry crews helped limit damage. insurance covered the loss.
Voter tallies across eight Shafter area precincts show results for Governor United States Senator Congress Assembly and Sheriff. Major candidates Merriam Olson Haight Noble Bancroft Downey Clements Hoelscher Newell Turner Champness and local precinct winners listed by precinct. Ballot totals vary per district with Shafter West Shafter South and Shafco reporting the highest counts for Olson and Downey in several races.
Union Oil announces the 6-34 well in the Shafter field is expected to reach completion today after 62 days of drilling. The project spudded September 9 with bottom depth 11 514 feet and a liner run Tuesday morning. If finished on schedule, six producers will be in the field with activity easing due to lower oil prices.
Superior Oil reports progress as Ruhl No 3 in the Shafter field reaches about 10 700 feet. The Shafter well is the firm’s only project there while activity continues in the Coalinga area and Stockdale west of Bakersfield with further plans not announced.
Led by Mrs. J. C. Ohanneson the local Red Cross drive begins with plans for a wide scale effort starting tomorrow. The organizing committee includes Mesdames J. J. Peters Ben H. Sill L. E. Plymale H. G. Comfort Ed Friesen F. Stillman Lawrence McGrane and Rev. Alfred T. Chandler.
In Sixteenth township the incumbent F E Mannel loses to H A Rightmire by 79 votes 844 to 765. Rightmire carries five of eight precincts with strongest support in Shafter South No 1 and Shafter South No 2 while Mannel leads Shafter precinct and Maple and Lerdo counties. Complete tabulation shows varied small margins across Shafter West No 2 Shafter South No 2 Shafco Shafter West No 1 Maple and Lerdo.
Miss Joyce Bayless a Shafter high school student suffered a broken leg and minor cuts in a Sunday morning crash on the Wasco highway while returning from Bakersfield with a group of friends. Fellow travelers Jack Deaton Leonard Stewart and Joe Turner were hospitalized with injuries and were improving. Turner expected to be released soon.
Five members of the William Newell family of Rosedale and two other individuals were seriously hurt when two cars driven by Richard Barrett and William Newell collided head on two miles south of Shafter on Saturday. Also injured were Féin Calvert and Eliza Newell among others. The injured were taken to Shafter for first aid then to Kern General Hospital.
William T. Lever of Visalia will speak Thursday evening at a Townsend club meeting in Richland auditorium. Alice Witzke, secretary, says the public is invited and a program will follow the bus.
Shafter man is reelected to farm bureau post as one of five directors at large. Andrew Heimforth replaces Walter Haag as retiring president at the Kern County Farm Bureau meeting in the new Bakersfield agricultural building. New officers plan a membership drive next month and promote the cotton classing service. A rising vote of thanks is given to Haag. Other officers include Marion Mitchell as vice president T. M. Martin as secretary treasurer E. G. Buerkle state director A. H. Walker alternate director and other delegates named.
National election returns show Democrats losing ground with Republicans winning key gains. California and Pennsylvania results highlight Culbert Olson and Sheridan Downey leading in state races while Republicans secure Senate seats and governorships. County totals and margins indicate a broad GOP advance amid New Deal-era debates.
