Carolyn Novak of Shafter High School placed seventh in the high school division at the American Competition for Mace and Military Drum Majors held at El Modena High School in Orange California. Ninety Southern California schools participated in the event.
The Shafter 4-H Club held its monthly meeting at Richland Primary School led by President Dana Nickel sen. Kara Nickelsen won the Junior Home Furnishing Award for garn ering the most points in that division at the Junior Exhibitors Fair Banquet. Also reported were livestock results, home economics, and National 4-H.
The Richland PTA Executive Board heard reports on the annual membership drive reaching 1 247 members and a carnival and barbecue profit of 3 576 53. Updates covered coffee meetings for parents of preschoolers, a Youth Concert on November 20, and upcoming meetings and projects including 4-H, teen leaders, and costume events.
Alan D. O'Brien son of Mr and Mrs Earl Ray O'Brien of 388 Ann is enlisted in the Air Force Delayed Enlistment Program. Recruiter Sgt Michael Baca says he will enlist on February 1 after graduating Shafter High in 1977 and will receive six weeks of basic training followed by technical training in the Mechanical field.
The Shafter American Legion Auxiliary will hear Fifteenth District President Betty McInness at the next meeting, set for Tuesday November 15 at 7 30 p m in the Shafter VFW hall. A bake sale is planned for Saturday November 12 starting at 9 a m in front of the Shafter Drug Store.
