Approximately 130 volunteer solicitors begin Monday in Shafter to raise 6062 for the Community Chest. Jack Thompson chairs the drive, with a one day emphasis and callbacks likely next week as solicitors visit homes and businesses.
Shafter and Wasco High schools will hold exchange assemblies before their football teams meet on Friday November 9. Principal Arthur H Johnson says the event aims to acquaint students and foster better relations between the two schools. Shafter hosts Wasco at 10 30 a m with Wasco presenting to Shafter later that day.
Girls outnumbered boys on the honor roll for the first six weeks at Shafter High School. Of 115 students with a B average or better, 85 were Freshmen, 30 Sophomores, 27 Seniors, and 24 Juniors. Names listed include Philip Anderson and Brenda Ballard among many others.
Shafter high faces possible temporary suspension of sports relations with Corcoran after a violent brawl last Friday night. The incident led to a battery complaint in Corcoran court and a recommendation to CIF for sanctions. The Shafter Wasco rivalry game proceeds Friday with three varsity matchups at 4 PM 6 PM and 8 PM in Shafter amid heightened tensions and radio coverage.
In Shafter the district race yielded a narrow margin for Democratic Rep. Harlan Hagen with Myron Tisdell winning city votes by a small margin. Voters approved Proposition 5 liquor sales with food not required, while Proposition 4 oil conservation failed about five to one. Totals: eligible 1502, cast 1287, Eisenhower 812, Stevenson 459, Kuchel 736, Richards 502, Tisdell 616, Hagen 609. Proposition 4 Yes 532 No 572 Yes 213 No 1017.
The Shafter City council will give first reading Tuesday night to the proposed master zoning ordinance recommended for acceptance by the planning commission. The ordinance aims to guide future city growth. Interested persons are invited to attend the 7 p.m. meeting.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture approved a six person slate for 1957, expanding to seven with the president as ex officio. New directors: Robert Somers, Earl Johnson, Lew Carroll, Sam Becker, Irvin Fike, Bill Johnson.
Sheriff Leroy Galven addresses Kern County law enforcement topics at the Shafter Lions Club weekly meeting Wednesday night. Reg Hammond served as the meeting’s chairman.
Friends report Mel Parrett is improving from injuries after a fall. He is a patient at Bakersfield Hospital and hopes to return home soon.
Kenneth Pipkin of the Shafter Lions announces the White Cane drive to raise funds for glasses and sight saving materials. The drive runs the week of November 12 with counter displays in local stores and ends with a personal drive on Friday and Saturday November 24 and 25. Funds support sight conservation and a portion benefits Richland P.T.A. to provide glasses for needy students.
Two Shafter High School classes the advanced office practice and advanced wood shop led by Mr. William A arnold prepared envelopes for the direct mail campaign. Letters mailed to residents began October 29 as part of the Community Chest drive effort.
Fire logs report a trailer fire west of Mandel on Meseed burning about 300 pounds of seed cotton owned by E. C. Eckmann. Earlier a Friday fire at the Cobertly-Weat Co city gin at Nickel and East Orange caused damage to seven bales of cotton, believed started in the ginning process.
Five hundred 4 Hers gathered at the Golden State school for achievement pins. Karen Wiens was color bearer and Marilyn Whitfield pianist. New All-Stars Susie Nicodemus and Louis Sandrinit spoke on 4-H experiences. Leaders and members received pins and sil ver stars. Maple club earned a gold charter seal.
