A look at Shafter community spirit shows groups uniting for public works and events. A Community Chest consolidates drives, a school pool tax passes, sewer bonds succeed, Halloween parade clears hoodlumism, Christmas decorations raise funds, and service clubs sponsor safety booklets Teen dances and cheer for youth.
County health officer Dr. William C. Buss announces immunization clinics in Shafter area. On Monday November 10 Maple School at 9, Kern Academy at 11, Lerdo School at 1, conducted by Dr. DeWitte T. Boyd with nurses Alice Burger and Annette Connor. Children urged to gain diphtheria protection starting at six months with boosters at school entry and again at age ten.
Renowned lecturer Kent Roberts, a foreign correspondent who recently surveyed world conditions, will appear in Shafter on Tuesday November 18. He will address the 8 p.m. Town Hall forum at Richland School Cafeteria on Behind the Headlines and attend a noon joint Rotary Kiwanis meeting at Cawelo to discuss Can Europe Be Saved.
The Shafter Press contest enters its fourth week ending Saturday at 4 p m with seven contestants vying for top prize of a Hiawatha Doodie Bug motor scooter or $150 in merchandise. Francis Rose leads with 95 000 votes, followed by Wesley Brown 82 500 Morton Brown 80 000 and Leon Pitts 70 000.
This week a girl weighing 8 pounds 4 ounces was born to Mr and Mrs Lester Martin in Cottage Hospital Oildale. Another girl weighing 7 pounds was born to Mr and Mrs Ray Fast at Mercy Hospital Bakersfield.
Mrs J T Kinsey of Houston and her sister Miss Leela Kinsey are visiting Mrs Jack Thompson at her home. They spent last weekend visiting in the southland.
A bar riot in Smiths Corner led to the arrest of brothers Boyd L. Moore and Linvil B. Moore after they attacked the cafe and smashed windows. John E. Stevens attracted the disturbance when warned by the proprietor. The Moores faced charges of intoxication disturbing the peace and displaying a deadly weapon, with fines and suspended sentences.
Mrs. Robert Stockton is back at home following an appendectomy. Her recovery is reported as smooth with medical approval given for routine activities.
Firefighters battled five fires in 24 hours amid wind storms. At Wasco Growers Co op Gin 7 bales burned. a Wedel home attic fire caused by a space heater was contained. hay near North Labor Camp burned. a three car collision led to a lost station wagon. a massive blaze at Buttonwillow Spicer City Cotton Gin threatened 1000 bales as Shafter, Wasco, and Buttonwillow crews fought flames for 12 hours with local water supplies aiding containment.
Twenty five volunteers began Shafter’s fourth annual Community Chest drive to raise 4739 for welfare and character building agencies. Chair Phil Channeson and secretary G Ohlsson mobilized workers and assigned contact lists with directions to leave uncollected contributions at Bank of America in Shafter.
Kiwanis Club held Football Day at Cawelo Motel on Wednesday noon with a Football Question Bee led by Jack Hill. Four Shafter high coaches Dan Bledsoe Dusty Rhoads Ed Schacht and Dick Heber were introduced. losing coach was to buy steak dinners, though results were unofficial.
Shafter residents prepare for a grand opening at the Shafter Motel tomorrow night with entertainment and surprises. New owner Ralph Boel discusses patronage and a wave of local well wishes follow his recent purchase from Jack and Otto Zimmerman who ran the property since 1945.
Shafter raised a total of 526 toward Kern County’s car lot of wheat for the Friendship Train, topping the 360 goal by 166. Donations came from Shafter High School and Richland Schools as well as service clubs and residents, with a toy locomotive collection device at Richland Schools and a prorated surplus benefiting the Shafter Community Chest and welfare funds.
Shafter residents and neighbors joined Home Appliance & Furniture Co to celebrate its 10th birthday and a two floor expansion doubling previous space. Tomorrow night at 7 15 prizes include an Electric Roaster a Westinghouse Portable Radio and a Westinghouse Electric Comfort. Emil Kirschenmann and Bill Stoller own the store.
Maple P T A will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 30 Monday evening in the school auditorium. John R. King social science teacher at East Bakersfield High School will speak on the Place of Teacher Association in placing a teacher. Mrs John Siemens and second and third grade mothers are hostesses.
