Exciting Lucky Numbers Days come to Shafter with a special section in this paper. The front page lists promotions and the rules for playing. A box in the insert’s upper right corner contains a number for readers to note.
Shafter resumes normal pace after a daylong Scout event. Troop 953 knot tying, Troop 901 cooking, and Troop 914 first aid demos drew County Council members to Bank of America parking lot. A parade led to Richland School for a Court of Honor listing Life Scout Andy Anderson, Star Scouts Paul Kodet Mark Parrott Randy Escalante. First Class honors went to Mark Parrott Jonathan Voth Carroll Winter Danny Mullen Tony Obrien Denny Atkinson Chris Spohn. Merit badges awarded to Troop 913 and Troop 901 members including Obrien Escul ture Mullen Atkinson Cornelius Templer Winter Parrott Voth Long and others.
At 2 pm near Shafferon Highway milesweet location the band discusses a Cor coran trip funded by supporters. After football season the band becomes a concert group with winter spring performances. Kern County Board of Trade officials note rising towing interest statewide to mark the population center. Congratulatory messages arrive from Alaska officials. Rev. John Spear of St. Mark's Episcopal Church Shafter delivers the invocation while Rev. Henry Dick of Mennonite Brethren Church Shafter offers the benediction. A US Marine Corps color guard will display the colors.
Frank H. Wisner announces a one hour 16 mm film featuring his African big game hunt. The show aims to share safari experiences with local scouts and the public, with a hoped audience turnout for the illustrated presentation.
Chamber of Commerce members received a list of 12 candidates from which four will be chosen for the Chamber Board of Directors for 1964. Names listed include Bruce Crawford Irvine Siow Mee Tee Ben Grundy Artson Johnson Clancy Keller Forrest Long D A Moyer and Am Stepp.
Sgt. Jerry Dodd of Kern County deputy sheriff spoke at the Shafter Rotary Club Tuesday luncheon during Foundation Week. Dr. Harold Freedman served as program chairman.
Gary Morse spoke at the Kiwanis Club meeting held at Veterans' Memorial Hall. He discussed the Christian Athletes' Program as the main subject with Rev. Se See serving as chairman. The session followed by Joé Board scheduled a meeting next Friday.
Lawrence Taylor pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in Bakersfield Municipal Court after a July incident. Dennis Sullivan led the hearing with Officer Alvis Smith and E C Williams diverting the case to a suspended sentence and release from Shafter police custody.
Police investigated a broken glass window at the State Theatre but failed to disclose any item stolen. no further damages or suspects named.
Mike Allen son of Mr and Mrs Lee Roy Allen of 300 Pine Street and Patti Wegis a junior at Shafter High School are named as finalists for a local exchange program. Their names have been sent to the New York office of AFS after eleven candidates were evaluated.
Rosanne Swellenberg hit a parked car on Lerdo. The vehicle owner Biloff was identified. Annie Mile Pilon of Montreal, Canada was cited for an accident.
Kern County residents will ballot on a state Kern County water agreement offering one acre foot of Feather River water. Officials stress the vote tackles only the contract terms, not future repayment methods or assessments expected to be set later.
Shafter building inspector C. H. Pope reports total permits of 103730.00. Highlights include a 60000.00 Mish Funeral Home permit at Pine and East Lerdo, a 16000.00 home at 1153 West Way, 12600.00 for Bill MacGregor, 1300.00 to Robert Wilson, 1000.00 to John Penner at Olive, 175.00 to Ed Ben, and a remodeling permit for Neufelds Auto.
The City of Shafter will dedicate the Highway DMV Building on Wednesday November 13 at 11 am. Local figures including longtime supporters and more than a dozen names helped move the project from California street to a Sunset park site with state approval. Invitations go to DMV staff Senator Stiern Assemblyman Williamson and other officials with a Kiwanis luncheon at noon.
