Richland to Recreation District pool transfer discussed at meeting

A legal notice approval for transferring pool ownership will be published three weeks before a meeting. The draft was presented by attorney Frank Fekete while Fred Starrh declined comment until reviewed by the District. Peggy Sue Newland was hired part time to help catch up accounts.

Special work week at Shafter Santa Fe Depot

A weeklong volunteer drive at the Shafter Santa Fe Depot aims to ready the site before November 13 when State Historical Resource Commission members visit. Art Kadel and Dwayne Armstrong lead efforts. call contacts are listed for involvement. The project is led by the Shafter Historical Society, not the city, with plans to photograph the depot on November 13 and possibly proceed with painting after guidance.

State Historical Resources panel to review Bakersfield depot nomination

Police report busy week with drinks, gunfire and theft

Shafter Police logged a busy week with three youths detained after bottles were thrown at a resident’s Olsen block home and charged with public drunkenness. Jimmy Joe Cloud faced brandishing a firearm and unlawful discharge charges after firing into the air on Louise Court. A 1962 Chevrolet Nova vanished from S Shafter Avenue, possibly stolen from an open ignition, warning motorists to lock their cars. A Halloween with 27 eggs confiscated marked a quiet night. Nina Fields, 60, died after being struck on S Shafter Avenue by a pickup driven by Theodore Bayless. aid was rendered at the scene and by ambulance staff.

Reward Offered in Trash Container Arson Spree

The Shafter Fire Department and Shafter Police Department announce a Secret Witness reward of 500 dollars for information leading to the arrest and conviction of arsonists who set multiple trash container fires in the Rodriguez Atkinson Olsen area. A 250 dollar reward is offered for tips. Call 746-4943 weekdays for a confidential code name and number. Residents urged to watch nearby trash containers and report suspicious activity.

Homecoming Queen Candidates Named at Shafter High

Five nominees for 1980 Shafter High Homecoming Queen were announced during Homecoming week. Candidates include Jessica Davis and Rosa Montoya, with plans to attend Bakersfield College and Lifkins College respectively, plus Christine Handel Moni Nixon and Diane Bassett, all involved in student activities and aiming for college majors in business administration fashion merchandising education and special education.
