A quiet Halloween in Shafter ended without major crimes, police report. Kiwanis parade aid credited for safe observance. four teens arrested for curfew violations and alcohol possession. Theft of a car battery reported, and a hit and run incident near Reiker Ave investigated with driver taken into custody.
The Kiwanis Halloween parade in Shafter drew several hundred spectators as units from the police department escorted the procession. Prizes were awarded across age groups including pre school to third grade winner Cleretine Nickelsen and Mona Vandevalk in fourth to sixth grades.
The Shafter City Council meeting scheduled for Monday evening October 26 was canceled as councilmen and city officials attended the League of California Cities convention in Los Angeles. The next regular meeting will be Monday November 9 at 7 p.m. in the Council chamber at city hall.
Shafter public offices will close on Veterans Day November 11 as schools and the post office observe the holiday. City hall and the Justice Court offices will close while merchants have no announced closures, making downtown activity appear largely business as usual.
Temperatures drop below freezing for the first time this autumn at Shafter area, with a low of 30 degrees on the night of Wednesday October 28 and 32 degrees on October 29. Daytime highs reached 81 on Friday October 30, while the week’s low was 68 on October 26. soil temps ranged from 52 to 62 at the U. S. Cotton Research Station in Shafter.
The North Shafter labor camp in Kern County ends winter shutdown and will reopen April 1 1971. The 100 unit camp, built for migrant workers, has limited occupancy with 25 families. a 64 unit camp remains open year round. Camp facilities include a day care center and on site maintenance, with finishing touches planned by contractor staff for the spring reopening.
