City Hall outlined a project to replace signs across 170 intersections within 90 days. Each durable sign costs $10 and features vandal resistant design, expected to endure for years beyond current installations.
The Halloween parade in Shafter drew hundreds along James Street and Central Avenue with Gorilla and space themes, a Cerebral Palsy float, and performances from Rio Bravo school band Cub Scouts and various youth groups. Prizes included 10 dollar awards for many entrants and 25 dollars for each school band, with judges noting the event as the most successful in fourteen years.
Verna Peters daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Peters of 254 Faber will compete next week for California Maid of Cotton in Sacramento judging November 13 and 14. At nineteen she stands five foot nine with blonde hair and hazel green eyes. If chosen she will advance to the national finals in Memphis Tennessee with further appearances in Kern County and Bakersfield.
Bertha Kirschenmann, 62, longtime Kern County resident, died October 31 in a Bakersfield hospital. Born July 13, 1897 in Menno South Dakota she moved to California 56 years ago and lived 40 years in Kern County with her husband Adolph Kirschenmann at 289 Cross St Shafter. Funeral services were held.
John J. Peters William Siemens Mert Wiedmann or Clyde Zach Clarence Neuman will be master of ceremonies for the tribute to Clarkin who has led the local branch since June 1948 and gained prominence in civic and community affairs.
Godbey and Bradshaw announced their purchase of Morris Furniture Store in Shafter. The store will open as City Furniture at 429 James Street after the sale effective November 2. The buyers are long-time locals with ties to McMahan's Co. Wheel er Furniture and local farming and trucking ventures.
Tommy J. Riggs seaman apprentice USN son of Mr and Mrs F A Riggs of Shafter California serves with Airborne Early Warning Squadron 4 in Jacksonville Florida He reported to Jacksonville on October 23 from the attack carrier USS Saratoga.
Kappa Nu Chapter and Delta Theta Tau sorority hosted a Harvest Date benefit with an aquarium exhibit in Wasco at the North Kern County Cerebral Palsy School. The Oct 24 event raised substantial funds and drew Shafter Wasco couples and guests from surrounding cities.
A local page publishes a tribute letter by Elizabeth La Dow with a personal poem urging unity and kindness. The issue also previews a February school election on a Kern County Union High School and Junior College District bond proposal for Shafter, aiming to fund five rooms and additional shop spaces.
