Shafter's Country Boy Market opens this week under long-time resident Alvis Smith who has taken over the former Boy Market. The store is described as the area’s most talked about and progressive market.
Shafter resident Smith announces plans for a grand opening of a refreshed Country Boy store in the coming weeks after interior and exterior remodeling. The notes cover Smith’s long association with Shafter and a family background, including his 1935 move from Texas and past work history.
Shafter Fire Department responded Saturday November 7 at 5 pm to a blaze in garbage containers in the alley behind 339 Central Avenue. Fence damage was estimated but specifics are unclear.
In Mrs. Sylvia Ganz's sixth grade class at Richland School students study notable figures through research and costume portrayals. Each pupil selected a person, used local libraries, and presented oral reports with visual backgrounds. Figures include Gandhi, Einstein, Carver, Eisenhower, Knute Rockne, Chiang Kai Shek, and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others.

Generals, after a 28-7 win over Lemoore, travel to Wasco to face league leading Tigers in the annual Shafter Wasco Big Game. Wasco tops small school scoring, while Shafter battles with a sputtering offense as Wasco holds a strong league advantage. The Generals aim to spoil with their explosive attack continuing to click.
More than 100 Shafter marksmen will compete in the 2-30 Club Turkey Shoot on Sunday November 22 hosted 3.5 miles south of Shafter on the Taft highway from 9 a.m. to sundown. Top shooters win oven dressed hens weighing about 12 pounds. Proceeds benefit a Shafter High School student’s education and the rheumatic fever fund. C L Howell says concessions and tickets are available from club members or at the event. attendees may bring their own firearms.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce schedules Monday noon meeting at Shafter Motel to discuss re routing of Central Valley Highway. Officials seek input from residents and plan to consult W G Welch state highway engineer on the by pass plan and final route details amidst local drought concerns.
Otis Edward Vancil 38, staying with Harold and Bertha Tolbert at 18860 Beech Ave, admitted to shooting Bertha Tolbert 37 in the chest and head at the H and R Club. Bertha Tolbert died in Kern General Hospital two hours later. Vancil borrowed a gun from his father for target practice before the homicide and was jailed on suspicion of homicide at Kern County Jail.
The Shafter Area Boy Scouts quota was reached with sustaining members, announced by H. W. Pat Kelley. Over fifty volunteers from Kern County Council contributed many hours, totaling 3115 dollars. Lead organizers included W Pat Kelly Ted Vignolo Gaede and Bill Siemens after a kickoff breakfast last month.
Nine prominent Shafter men were nominated for the Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Board of Directors. nominees include Everett Barnett Tony Brown Tony Heller Art Hemingson Earl Johnson Rev Mel Krug Jim Tucker Lowell Webb Wayne Woods. Balloting will be held November 20. Four members will serve varying terms on the twelve member board.
Shafter marked three notable business anniversaries this week. Irvin E. Fike celebrates 20 years as the local Chrysler Plymouth Imperial dealer, Center Valley Highway location newly established about 11 years ago. Earl Johnson of Johnson Neuman marks his 19th annual sale, a longtime Shafter event. Bob Tatum reports three years of Modern Market success, crediting smart local advertising and low prices for growth.
Richard Snyder is named proxy for the Firemen's Association representing Shafter and Kern County at an upcoming meeting of the group in Shafter planned for February.
Brian ONeill an eighth grader at Rio Bravo school overcomes polio since age two. The tiny school with 130 pupils has a unique band cart system that lets him march and play. He joined the band years ago and now travels with a cart built by students. Next year he moves to Shafter High School continuing with music and school pride.
A group from Shafter Wasco and Bakersfield led by Elbert Franz formed a new corporation to engage in consumer loan and conditional sale contracts in Shafter. All stock has been subscribed and awaits final legal completion.
