Ostrich Farm Legend in Kern County Captured in Tracy Story
Mrs. Tracy recalls in detail the rise of Kern County’s ostrich farm begun in 1906 at the Tracy ranch ten miles west and south of Shafter. The herd grew to 175 birds before the war, with feathers sold to eastern wholesalers and shops in Oakland and San Francisco. The memorable 1910s era included a grand picnic that drew hundreds and a Red Cross fundraiser that netted $2,600 in two days. The birds could outrun a horse and occasionally wandered beyond Wasco and Buttonwillow, prompting swift returns by a ranch truck.
