Shafter High honors seniors at assembly with scholarships
Seven Shafter High School seniors received scholarships and cash awards at the senior assembly on May 22 in the school auditorium. Awards came from six community organizations and Bank of America certificates were presented to Alvin Walker and Pat Cornell among others. Additional honors included California Scholarship Federation life memberships and the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award. Water project updates and canal allocations for irrigation were announced, with first water expected in the Poplar avenue area and later areas as connections are completed. Opening of the Friant Kern flood gates was delayed about two months due to late prefabricated steel deliveries.

Bradford to Run for State Meet Glory in Berkeley

Central Market Awning Damaged By Fire
Fire damaged the awnings in front of Central Market Sunday afternoon. Fire was believed caused by a discarded cigarette. Damage estimated at 350 dollars with additional water damage. Owner Emil Kirschenmann thanked the volunteer fire department for their prompt response.

The community of Shafter will observe Memorial Day Thursday with 11 a.m. graveside services at the Shafter cemetery conducted by the American Legion post. Gene Guenther leads the program with Earl Wipf as chaplain, a firing squad salute and taps by a bugler, at the cemetery flagpole.

Putman Sets New Valley Swim Mark at Chowchilla
Glen Putman led Shafter A and B swimmers to strong finishes in the Valley small schools meet held in Chowchilla. Putman won the 100 yard breaststroke in a Valley record 1 11.2, Bledsoe placed third in the 200 yard A freestyle, Blumkin earned third in the 200 yard B freestyle, fifth in the 100 freestyle, and the A team was fifth in the 200 yard medley while the B team took fourth in the same event.

Boy Scout Troop 913 Organized In Richland
The community forms a new Boy Scout Troop 913 sponsored by the Richland Parent-Teacher Association to complement the oldest Cub Scout Pack 913. Charter members include Iry Frizzell Richard Nations Tommy Wilson Michael Baker and Ryan Jeffries on the roster. Garry Frizzell serves as patrol leader and Tommy Wilson as assistant patrol leader for the Eagle patrol. Lewis Sutton a Richland school teacher is the scoutmaster though will not assume active leadership until September, with junior assistant scoutmaster Jim guiding the troop in the interim.

Shafter Graduations Set for Tuesday to Thursday
A total of 347 public school youths will graduate this week in Shafter from Maple Lerdo Richland and Shafter High School. Commencement began last Thursday with 17 Maple seniors. graduations include Richland on Wednesday at 7 30 at Shafter High auditorium and Shafter High on Thursday at 8 o clock. The list of 1957 graduates includes Gerald Wayne Adams Zulema Almanza Christine Alvear and many others.
