SHS Baccalaureate Exercises Planned for May 26

Health officers praise Shafter shed operators for clean 1956
Kern County Health Officer Dr William C Buss credits the 1956 sanitation at Shafter potato sheds for the lowest sanitation-complaint calls in history. Ordinance No 109 of May 28 1956 curbed decaying fruit and vegetables and reduced flies and odors with operator cooperation.

Robert Neuman Secures $10,000 Court Judgment
Robert Neuman, a Shafter rancher, won a $10,000 judgment from Judge Robert B. Lambert after suffering injuries in March 1956 on Highway 99 near Bakersfield. The defendant, Wayne B. Thomas, did not contest the suit, and the case was tried without a jury.

Woman Jailed After Knife Attack Case
Virginia Nelson, 26, of Woodland California, was sentenced to 12 days in county jail after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace. The charge was reduced from a more serious assault with a weapon. The complainant Charles Iby told Deputy Sheriff Gordon Dieber that Nelson attacked him with a pocket knife during a ride in Shelby's car.

Pupil Earns Third in High School Chemistry Quiz
Shafter High School student Jim McClure won third place in the chemistry contest with 715 points out of 725. The top prize carried a $100 cash award, second place $25, and the next four scorers received Lange's Handbook of Chemistry. Fifty students entered, with McClure just ten points behind the winner.
