A Great Enterpriser Passes Saul Camp Proved America Still

California legislators note the death of Saul A. Camp of Shafter on May 29 1957. Born October 7 1891 in Gaffney South Carolina he moved to Kern County in 1920s building a farming empire and a premier harness horse stable. Known as a titan of American agriculture Camp rose from a farm hand to leading orchards and ginning ventures in 34 years before his passing at 63.

Infant Reimer Funeral Held At Shafter Cemetery

Graveside services were conducted Monday at 2 30 p m in Shafter Cemetery for Baby Girl Reimer daughter of Mr and Mrs Reimer of Rt No 1 Box 48 Shafter who died June 2 in Bakersfield hospital Rev Waldo Wiebe of the Mennonite Brethren church officiated and interment followed. She is survived by her parents grandparents Mr and Mrs Zed Holland and Mr and Mrs C C Reimer and a brother Gregory Reimer all of Shafter. Armstrong Mortuary handled arrangements.

Bradford Wins 1st State Track Crown For Shafter High

Jesse Bradford the spectacled star of Shafter High became the first Shafter student to win a state track title by taking the 120 yard low hurdles in 19.00 seconds. He holds four other school records and plans to enroll at Bakersfield while turning down the 220 hurdles and decathlon this summer due to scheduling. Coaches note his national potential and multiple scholarship offers.

Richland School cafeteria worker retires after 16 years

Mrs. Rose Schaeffer retires after 16 years serving at Richland School cafeterias. A Russian-born immigrant, she arrived from South Dakota in 1935 and began cafeteria work in December 1941. The district expanded facilities multiple times, now feeding over 1,500 students daily across two cafeterias.

The Kiwanis Club of Wasco will be chartered at Richland School Cafeteria in Shafter with Shafter Kiwanis Club sponsoring and the Bakersfield Hawaii District co sponsoring. The district grows to 359 clubs as Art Hemingson hosts the ceremony as lieutenant governor for Division 18.

Annexation Petition for 15 Acres to Shafter City

The Shafter city council received a petition from A. R. Duehren of Bakersfield seeking annexation of 15 acres on the west boundary. The area is bounded by Lerdo Avenue north Terra Vista Court south South Valley Avenue east Becker Street west. The council referred the matter to the planning commission. this is the fourth petition in recent weeks.

Fireman Stops Fire Before Alarm With Unorthodox Method

Volunteer Fireman Frank Contreras spotted smoldering trash in a downtown alley on Wednesday. He extinguished the blaze using an improvised method described as a stepped up samba, then contacted the fire department to report the incident.

Mrs Henry Peters Dies After Lingering Illness

Mrs Henry Peters longtime Shafter resident dies Monday evening at White Memorial Hospital Los Angeles aged 76. She ran the Shafter Maternity Home for 11 years producing over 400 babies before remarriage to Henry Peters in 1945. Funeral set for Saturday 2 PM at Mennonite Brethren church with interment in Shafter cemetery. Survivors include husband Dave Strauss son four step sons four daughters and several grandchildren.

The Shafter city council passes a dog ordinance with fines up to 500 dollars and jail terms. It bans dogs roaming on public property and requires vaccination licensing and containment. The city seeks a dog catcher to enforce the new rules starting June 26.

Haver Resigns Key Testing Post at Richland School

Warren Haver, director of child welfare and attendance at Richland School, resigns to become school psychologist for Orange Unified School District. Orange district includes nine elementary schools plus junior and senior high, serving nearly 4000 students. Mrs Haver, a substitute at Richland, will teach in Alameda School District in Downey, her prior district.
