The Annual Memorial Day Service will be held at Shafter Cemetery on May 26 starting at 10 00 a.m. The service honors loved ones and friends who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Saturday June hosts 20th annual Bobby Sox and Blue Jeans Car Show at Wasco High School from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. featuring hot rods music and food. raffles prize engine and transmission. proceeds support Kern County American Cancer Society Kern Co. Honor Flight and Wasco High School Scholarship Fund.
At the May 19 Richland School District Board meeting principals praised volunteers from Golden Oak Redwood Sequoia and Richland Junior High for their service. Retirees including Ann and Roger Strader Olga Rodriguez Elaine McClenny Paul Carlson and Diana Garcia were recognized with plaques. The board noted the 19th Annual Fourth Grade Sleep Over and celebrated Richland Junior High athletes at the Valley Championship track meet with medals awarded.
The Shafter Cinco De Mayo Celebration highlighted a lively weekend with a parade car show and park activities at Manuel Park. City Council awarded certificates recognizing Yamilet Reyes as Queen and Brenda Ortiz and Sandra Mendoza as runners up with proclamations for the queen’s title.
Don Reed died May 22 2014 after an extended illness at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. He led Reed Print from Arvin Tiller to Lamont Reporter Shafter Press Wasco Tribune and Delano Record adding a modern printing plant and desk top publishing. Survived by wife Susan Hartflat daughter Stefani Baker son Jason Reed siblings and seven grandchildren. Former staff remember him as a caring boss who built loyal teams and communities served by Reed Print.
