The Shafter Press will close Monday May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. All deadlines shift up one day. Ad submissions for the May 28 issue must be received by Thursday May 22 at 12 00 p.m. Thank you for your patronage and have a wonderful holiday.
The Shafter Memorial Day service is set for May 26 at Shafter Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. A 20th annual Bobby Sox and Blue Jeans Car Show follows June 7 at Wasco High School from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Proceeds aid Kern County groups including the American Cancer Society.
The Shafter Learning Center opens June 4 in shared space with the renovated Shafter Library. The project, led by David Franz and a partnership between Richland School District and the City of Shafter, offers computers, classrooms, and high speed internet with programs for grades 1-12 including Summer Reading Academies and courses in French, Advanced Math, Writing, Computer Programming, and History led by Program Coordinator Amerika Nino Rodriguez.
Shafter announced revision of its sexual offender ordinance and enforcement changes. Wasco faces a federal lawsuit over its ordinance, the eighth in a wave, with CA RSOL claiming violations of public information rights and bans on visits to libraries, schools, bus stops, and playground sites.
On Tuesday May 13 Kern County Deputies with Narcotics Enforcement and Code Compliance Officers executed a search warrant near Cecil Avenue and Wasco Pond Road discovering 79 marijuana plants valued around 200000 and non compliance with Medical Marijuana Cultivation Ordinance. A traffic stop yielded a shotgun, ammunition, and marijuana. Greg Zuniga, 30, Bakersfield, was arrested for illegal possession of a shotgun and ammunition and marijuana. He was booked into the Central Receiving Facility.
The City of Shafter with Kern County Animal Services held a Saturday vaccination and licensing event at Mannel Park drawing hundreds of dogs and owners. Vaccines were $3, licenses $15 for spayed or neutered dogs, $60 for intact animals, with free microchipping offered. Future clinics are planned in Taft Tehachapi Frazier Park and Buttonwillow.
