Twenty five Shafter beauties compete for five Queen positions and four attendants at the Shafter Potato Festival contest in the high school auditorium. No admission charged. a capacity crowd expected. Queen wins a $100 wardrobe from local stores. four attendants get $20 clothing orders. The Queen and court ride on the parade floats June 12.
The Harvey Gaede Pontiac Agency opens its new Lerdo Road location East of Santa Fe with a modern showroom and convenient layouts for new car displays and service. An inaugural event is planned for tomorrow in the updated building reflecting current automotive dealership designs.
Memorial Day events will be held Sunday at Shafter Cemetery led by the American Legion post. The program begins at 10 00 a m with brief services followed by Legion Auxiliary graveside decorations. Legion Commander Harry Sturm Chaplain J B Henderson and Rem Bristow will lead the program featuring color guards firing squad and band. Taps to be sounded and a brief address given before grave decorations and conclusion.
Kenneth Houston Haws a Wasco two year old was killed Wednesday afternoon when struck by a car in potato fields near Wasco. He was with his brother Johnnie near a road as John Riley drove by. The father shouted to stay back but Kenneth ran toward the road and was hit as the car could not stop in time.
Shafter residents are reminded the Bank of America will close from tomorrow noon until Wednesday morning. It will be closed at noon Saturday and stay closed Monday for Memorial Day, and Tuesday for the election.
Shafter merchants announce all stores will close Monday May 31 in observance of Memorial Day. The holiday follows years of Sunday observance and will keep Sunday hours for some shops. Banks and liquor outlets face Tuesday reopening or election day closures.
The 330 unit Minter Village project at Shafter Roost near the former army air base is nearly finished. Bakersfield American Legion post operates the nonprofit housing with many post members. 235 units are occupied, 35 more open Tuesday, 32 on June 7, and 28 on June 14.
Finals of the Miss Kern County beauty contest set for tonight with Shafter hosting the event and local entrants expected to compete for the crown.
Shafter residents head to the polls Tuesday to decide races for Congressman and Kern County Assemblyman amid cross filings. Democrats Fred D. Allen Gordon Garland Oscar Greene and William H. Stuart face Republicans Dr. Benjamin Pratt C Ray Smith and Tom Werdel for Congress. Assembly contests include Joe C. Lewis James Cardwell and W E Jimmy James with cross filings. The First County Supervisorial District sees incumbent W Roy Woollames against Ardis Walker in a non party race. If a candidate wins both party tickets in any race, they are effectively chosen. otherwise a fall run off will occur in November.
Four attendants present as Paul Garrett and his orchestra provide music for judging tonight. Contestants will appear in street dresses with three stage passes, then pass through the auditorium. Intermission follows as they change into bathing suits, with another swimsuit appearance for final judging.
Shafter High School announces an unexpected holiday on Monday May 31 due to a Memorial Day schedule change. No extra day off. students will follow the regular schedule and finish on Wednesday June 2.
The American Legion Auxiliary reported a record Poppy Day fundraiser raising 354.00 last Friday and Saturday. Chairwoman Mrs. J. W. Lassiter credited a larger sales effort with help from Mrs. George Guenther and three Shafter girls Donna Hare Marilyn Smith and LaVerne Cummings.
Fire at Bailey Camp Smiths Corner yesterday destroyed one cabin and damaged a second. County fire crews responded at 1 56 pm and contained the blaze 18 minutes later with help from Shafter volunteers and a Minter Field truck. Captain Kinkaid received a minor facial burn. Tenants of the demolished cabin were absent at the time and both cabins were locked.
Senior class of Shafter High School completes four years of study with graduation in the gym on Wednesday. Diplomas will be presented by board member Phil Channeson as 72 students are named, including Bob Albright through Steven Minor Radio, with a Sunday service honoring their upcoming entries into adulthood.
