Unified effort eyed to solve Kern County water problem

A Kern County group led by W R Bollomes plans a Santa Barbara conference with officials and attorneys to explore a unified water development approach. The Santa Barbara County Water Agency coordinates regional efforts, can levy taxes, and would handle administration for multiple districts.

Local County Building to Get Addition

Judge E K Grant secured county approval for a new larger court room, police and deputy sheriff facilities, and a new jail section at the Shafter County Building. The addition, planned as a wing built in 1948, will cost about $10,000 with labor partly donated by local industrial workers. Miss Agnes Koehn will join full-time clerk duties starting next Monday to improve court efficiency.

Governor Earl Warren regrets missing the Shafter Potato Festival on June 12 as he travels to New Hampshire for the Governors Conference. The invitation was extended by Dr. J. H. Revell and the Shafter Potato Festival committee.

Memorial Day Rites At Shafter Cemetery

Local American Legion Post plans Memorial Day services Sunday May 30 at Shafter Cemetery. The 10 09 a m ceremony features colors, Shafter High School Band, firing squad and detachments of Civil War and Spanish American War veterans. Driver Receives 18 Months and Fines After Accident

Jim Murry Ross, driving south on Shafter, lost control near Poso and Shafter streets and overturned. Passenger Leroy Grover, 15, suffered a fractured left arm. Ross faced charges of reckless driving drunkenness and concealed weapon. He received 540 days and 750 dollars in fines and is confined in the county road camp.

Shafter Merchants Succumb To Wasco In Final Tune-Up

Wasco Merchants defeated Shafter 10 to 1 at Wasco ballpark in a pre league game. Art Demery pitched six hits allowed and hit the game only home run. George Terry and Phil Strauch led Wasco with three hits apiece while Bus Peyton caught well. Bob Scales led Shafter with two singles as Wasco strengthens title favorites status in Kern County.

Jacobsen Wins Large Majority in Richland School Board

Rolf Jacobsen secured a commanding win for the Richland School District Board of Trustees with 212 votes to 25 for Ed Kruger. Jacobsen, the three year incumbent, serves on a three member board with C. J. Vignolo and Merrill Thomas. The district under this board is building a large three unit aquatic center and multiple new classrooms.

Ray Carter Injures Hand Shooting Accidental Discharge

Ray Carter, 21, a local athlete, accidentally discharged a .22 rifle while loading it next to a car. The wound was painful but treated, and he remained in good condition after medical care.

Kelly Heads Planning Commission in Shafter

Shafter city officials organized the Planning Commission Monday night at city hall with H. W. Pat Kelly named chairman and Frank Shaw secretary. The body includes three former council members Paul V. McClure Glenn O. year term and Adolphu plus four citizens Wm. Dalke Rolf Jacobsen Joe OS and H. W. Kelly on varying terms. Meetings set for the third Wednesday monthly.

Nine more enter Potato Festival Queen contest in Shafter

Eleven entries now total 25 for the Potato Festival Queen contest in Shafter. Finals move to Friday night May 28 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium with an orchestra and no admission. The winner receives a $100 wardrobe and will ride the queen float in the parade. A queen's court of four princesses will be named.

With 32 of 42 precincts reporting, Dr Arthur H Warner led Kern County High School District results by 2 444 to 2 390 amid a strong Inyokern Ridgecrest turnout that shifted the outcome against Phil Ohanneson who won most other areas.

Hattie Grisso Dies at 72 in Kern County

Hattie Grisso age 72 of Shafter died in a Bakersfield hospital on May 21. Born September 22, 1875 in Mount Holm Arkansas she had lived in Kern County 24 years. Funeral services were May 24 at 2 pm at the Fourfold Gospel Church Wasco with Rev. William Kummerfeld officiating. Robert L. Jones Funeral Home Wasco in charge and burial in Union Cemetery Bakersfield. Survived by son Paul Grisso now in McFarland. daughters Mae Sereno Dinuba and Ruth Arnold now in South America. 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
