Local 8th grade girls shine at Kern County Science Fair
Sixty five Kern County students earned first and second place honors and qualified for the California State Science Fair held May 25 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Richland Junior High entrants Laura Arnold and Lederhos studied mammalian biology with white and black mice to explore dominant genes and 21 day gestation. California officials note about 900 participants from 350 schools competed for more than 50 thousand dollars in awards. results were not yet available.

Devon Nicole's House memorial birth and dreams for a Boston hospital family
A newborn Devon Nicole Missert died five days after birth. Her grandparents Ruth Adams and Jim Blanton are behind Devon Nicole's House near teens, a Boston Children's Hospital lodging for families, opening June 14 after 4 1/2 years of effort. Her heart valves were donated to children with congenital heart defects. The Misserts previously stayed at Dartmouth's Children's Hospital and David's House, a nonprofit that supports families with children in hospital.

Thirty new homes proposed near Sequoia School in Shafter
The Shafter Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider a 30 lot single family subdivision on 13.94 acres at Fresno and Manuel Avenues, across from Richland School District's Sequoia Elementary. Ronald J. Staub of Tucson proposes parcels from 11,520 to 16,890 square feet. The Sequoia School broke ground May 25 and aims to open for the 2005 2006 year. The council approved a four way stop at the corner to calm traffic near crosswalks.

World War II memorial highlights Memorial Day 2004
The Shafter Memorial Day service on May 31 honors the Greatest Generation with color guards, speakers, and a potluck luncheon at Veterans Hall. A nationwide World War II memorial dedication in Washington DC on May 29 will be carried live by History Channel and C-Span.
