In a staged intrasquad drill, IRVIN S. Ser and Durant form a battery as Mitchell hits the first ball and rushes to first base. The scene triggers a brief dispute over time use as players hurry to resume running.
Kingsley and the baby escaped with minor injuries after an intersection crash Saturday evening at California avenue and James street. Driver Jack Brown from Bakersfield and his father were uninjured. The Kingsley car skidded 21 feet and overturned. Deputy W T Brothers investigated and aided the injured.
William Horner of Shafter and Bakersfield pilot Frank Don Carlos witnessed the Hanford air show on Sunday. Horner described splendid aerial entertainment but noted a tragic accident in which a woman flyer, Beatrice Nadon, was burned to death. Vitoc H. Rubey, member of the California State Board of Equalization, who has Sacramento headquarters, visited Shafter Tuesday and is currently working out of Bakersfield.
Work on the Union-Superior absorption plant in the Shafter oil field nears completion with operation planned mid June. Ground was broken March 7 south of the Union discovery well, representing over 700000 dollars in capital. The plant will treat 20 million feet of gas daily from existing and new wells, with gas sold to Pacific Lighting and distributed state wide by Southern California Gas Company.
Kern Academy conducted commencements with high school and eighth grade diplomas. High school graduates include Levi Richert Kenneth Heinrich Mildred McCulloch Lorraine Knecht Evelyn Wegand La Verne Buller Herbert Harder and Charles Conley Delores Koop James Abrams from Bakersfield. Baccalaureate sermon by S D A San Jose drew 900 attendees.
Dr. D. G Milbrath of the state agriculture department outlines potato tuber infections in Shafter May 14 including Black Leg and bacterial soft rot. He notes soil moisture and heavy rains promote decay and advises growers to dry soil before digging to reduce bacterial invasion and allow wounds to heal.
A London Answers Magazine writer warns against using umbrellas in storms as metal frames attract lightning. Forked lightning is seen as more dangerous and sheet lightning is distant. If lightning strikes a companion, loosen clothes, warm the victim, and seek medical help, with care for burns and possible artificial respiration.
