Kenneth Howell elected president of the Shafter 20-30 Club at a weekly meeting held at Cawelo Motel. Ed DeMello named first vice president sty Rheads second vice president Lloyd Suckitt sergeant at arms. Officers begin July 1 with six month terms. Kern County Sheriff Johnny spoke on enforcement in Kern County as Bakersfield and 20-30 clubs attended the inter-club meeting presided by Harry Thompson.

Potato Festival Queen Contest Extends Entry Deadline
A 27 hour extension pushed the entry deadline to 3 p.m. today for the Potato Festival Queen Contest. Eligible entrants are girls 16 to 24 within five miles of Shafter. Entries were filed at the Potato Festival committee office or Press office with finals set for Friday May 28 after a Monday prelim at the high school auditorium.

Shafter Club Booth Locations Set at Festival Meet
Representatives from social and service clubs gathered with Shafter Potato Festival officials to draw for booth locations in the Kelly and Channeson building lobby. Booths by soft drink firms will be 14 feet square and decorated by Warren Decorating Co. Each booth must serve hot dogs or hamburgers as a minimum to feed crowds, with 50 percent of net profits donated to the relief committee and the other half to the operating club. The Altar Society drew first for placement.

Poppy Day Launches Here and Nationally This Week
The American Legion Auxiliary runs Poppy Day today and tomorrow in Shafter and nationwide. Volunteers sell memorial crepe paper poppies to fund rehabilitation for disabled veterans and assist child welfare for veterans' children. Poppies are made by disabled veterans at Sawtelle Hospital under California Auxiliary supervision.

Glenn Nay Chosen as New Rotary President in Shafter
Shafter Rotarians unanimously elected Glenn Nay as new president to replace Joe Cosgrove who resigned after a city transfer. Nay, a 19-year Shafter resident and World War I veteran, has led the Agricultural Department at Shafter High School and serves on the county fair board and city council since 1938.

Week’s Shafter Arrests Highlight Local Police Activity
City police reports list three arrests this week. Tom Fink, 43, a Shafter resident for 12 years, was punished for a fictitious check offense with $25 fine and 30 days suspended for two years. Willie Baker, 38, jailed one week, received 30 days suspended for two years and a $25 fine for drunkenness. Carl Whitaker, 33, long-time Shafter resident, received no sentence shown. Carl Grant, 34, arrested on a warrant from RS township justice court for contempt of court. He has resided in Shafter for eight years.

Stoller Blimp Trip to Be Broadcast on KPMC
