Shafter considers a new dog control ordinance with penalties up to 500 dollars or six months. It requires city licensure for dogs over six months, city vaccination, no stray dogs on public property, seizure of violators, confining breeding females during mating season, and nightly tethering or penning of all dogs. Owners must claim seized dogs within three days.
A sleet wreck on Highway 99 near German injures no one but demolishes a car as Tom Flanagan and Dick Scott arrive at the scene. In Santa Barbara ten thugs beat three Shafter farmers for thrills, with no robbery. Richland school records show 1901 pupils, near the 1953 high, while potato worker flux grows. Postmaster Guenther cites 400 North Shafter residences and rents boxes. calls for two rural routes.
Four Shafter boys will receive Eagle Scout awards at a Court of Honor on Wednesday May 22 in the Shafter High School auditorium. Recipients are Phillip Siemens Buddy Engel Mike Panero and Jimmy Woodard. Ed Peters Kern County Council president will present the awards and many other scouting honors will be awarded as local hosts prepare for the ceremony.
Examinations for prospective umpires and scorekeepers for the Summer Recreation Softball league will be given tonight in Room 25 of Shafter High School. Interested persons should see Hal Williams at Shafter High School at 7 30 p m.
Maple plans May 23 commencement for 17 graduates. Ceremony features student performances including greetings by Karen Bartel, violin solo by Evelyn Schellenberg, brass quintet, woodwind trio, and school orchestra numbers. Rev. Melvin Krug to give invocat ion. fifth and sixth graders perform chorus numbers.
Shafter hosts the Sequoia Division Track and Field meet with entries from ten schools. Star athlete Jesse Bradford aims to extend his dominance in the 180 yard low hurdles 100 yard dash and pole vault while seeking a divisional record in the former.
Shafter High School conducts eighth grade registration with Principal Arthur H. Johnson and Dean Dan Bledsoe guiding students through graduation requirements ninth grade electives and student government programs. Counselors briefed eighth grade teachers who then help students plan schedules for the coming year. The incoming freshman class is expected to reach 295 students.
H R Hammond principal of Richland Intermediate School was elected unanimously president of the Shafter Lions Club. He succeeds Lewis Carroll. Other officers named include Dave Merkel first vice president John Thanneson second vice president Harry Blumkin secretary Elliott Garrison treasurer Russell Kodet tail twister Dick Scott assistant tail twister Merrill Lamley Lion tamer Bob Moore assistant lion tamer and R Bongberg Elmer Mettler board members.
Leslie L. Robinson Post No. 213 of the American Legion passes a resolution opposing regular school sessions on Memorial Day. The vote was unanimous, led by Bill Banks and Claude Camp, with J. F. Janzen to send letters to state and district school officials. Bruce Crawford, Richland district superintendent, notes Memorial Day is one of several holidays when classes are held to let older pupils help with the Shafter Potato harvest.

W G Linderman controller for Em H Mettler and Sons spoke to the Exchange Club at Montgomery Hall New Cuyama on May 14. He attacked day taxing as a spending orgy and called it the worst form of corruption.
P L Arnold longtime Shafter High School business education department chairman announced his retirement after 25 years at Shafter High School and 31 years in teaching. He joined in 1952 under Principal Elmer J Peery as the school grew from 174 to about 800 students. Born in Canton South Dakota he earned an AB in commerce and social science from the University of South Dakota in 1912 and later studied at the University of Southern California. Arnold also taught at Madison South Dakota in 1912 and served as business chair for five years.

Richland district shows Leonard Gaede as sole candidate. polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the intermediate school lounge.
The Shafter Kern county Farm Bureau center will be reactivated May 29 with Roy McLain of Visalia, first vice president of the California Farm Bureau, speaking on the American Farm Federation stand before the House on the potato marketing order. Herbert Dalton of Berkeley, a CFBF field crops specialist, attends. The meeting at 8 p.m. in Veterans Memorial hall invites all farmers.
About 30 eighth grade students at Lerdo school will observe their annual ditch day on May 24 with a field trip to the Catalina Islands. The trip is a senior class project and approved by the county superintendent of schools, per district superintendent Gerald Miller.
