Bakersfield Community theatre unveils a six play 1941 42 season at the new Washington school auditorium with Life With Father as the opening production in October. Local residents including Shafterites hold season tickets and others are invited to join. Warde D Watson of Bank of America is president.
Three cement tennis courts are under construction at Shafterhigh Stool. One court will be completed this week and the other two within three weeks. They will not be ready for use immediately but are expected to open during the summer.
J. R. Bright of the Kern County Agricultural Conservation committees urges growers to expand 1941 plantings of small white beans under the Food For Defense program. A price support aims to keep eastern market levels near five dollars per hundredweight through May 1 1942, with freight differentials boosting potential returns. The proposal calls for a 35 percent nationwide acreage increase, favors Great Britain by promoting small white beans, and offers no deductions from 1941 conservation payments if soil-depleting allotments are exceeded. Government purchases are planned from cooperating growers. Local farmers are asked to visit the Kern County Agricultural Conservation office to arrange increased plantings promptly.
Salvation Army members announce the annual drive in the Shafter community from June 2 through June 9. The district set a $400 target with 20 percent allocated locally by the Shafter committee. efforts will extend to rural areas of Shafter county and San Joaquin Valley. Committee members include Herb Schirmer chair man T V Little O T Olson M L Thomas Dr Jack Lighthill Mrs Joe W Frizzell Mrs T V Little and Bill Handel.
Ralph Lachenmaier of Shafter delivered a decisive two in the tenth inning as Dr. Peppers edged the Los Angeles Super Cold Refrigeration 3 2 in Bakersfield Saturday night. Lachenmaier's clutch double produced the winning run while the pitcher held the opposition to two runs.
