The fate of Lydia Rogalsky, sister of Mrs. Ida Bartel and Mrs. J. W. Nickel, remains uncertain after the Egyptian steamer Zamzam was sunk in the south Atlantic between April 9 and 23. Reports say passengers, including 120 Americans, were landed in German-occupied France. Rogalsky’s last word came from Brazil stating the ship would sail April 9 for Cape Town.

A Shafter committee of local grocery dealers seeks a food stamp depot and has written to Lawrence I Hewes FSA Fresno director. FSA supervisor Austin V Harper said about half of the county grant car load is centered in Shafter. The group holds its seventh annual golf tournament and barbecue at Stockdale Country Club on Saturday June 7, six miles south of Bakersfield.

425 Men On Job At Airfield As Work Is Pushed
About 425 men were working yesterday at the United States army airfield east of Shafter as construction proceeds and the field’s general layout and headquarters take shape. Cadets and officers will move in by mid July. 140 cadets start flying June 11 at Kern County airport. The field is to host 630 cadets in three classes, with 229 officers and around 2,000 enlisted plus civilians. Washington allocations include 397,068 for housing at local Taft fields and 1,300,000 for runways. the local field will be about twice Taft’s size.

Bucket Brigade Saves Barn At High School Farm
A bucket brigade formed by agricultural students saved a barn and nearby structures at the Shafter high school farm when a hay stack fire broke out Monday morning. Firefighters arrived as flames reached the barn and used truck water and irrigation ditch pumping to extinguish the blaze. Damage to hay and the barn was estimated at 250 dollars. cause suspected as spontaneous combustion from green hay or rain-wet hay.

Supervisors Pledge Support for Lerdo Road Project
