Union Oil spudded its Crites 43 28 well in the Shafter field north area Section 28 25. Reported depth reached 1500 feet. A new location 74 11 at Coles Levee field was announced with tests at 78 2. Also noted are the Stockdale wildcat 31 3 labeled a no dope hole.

Infant James Marsh Dies. Funeral Held in Janzen Chapel

Rehabilitation of delinquent youths is camp challenge
Leland Scott superintendent of Camp Owens described a military style program for delinquent boys ages 14 to 18. He noted eligibility for release requires 1500 merits and that successful reintegration is essential to prevent relapse. The Kern county camp serves 12 counties with 60 boys housed and costs about 35 dollars per month per boy plus 10 dollars rebated for community work.

Air Corps Officers Urge Recreational Facilities At Shafter
Capt. T. J. Cunningham and Lt. D. W. Eisenhart urged Shafter to provide leisure facilities for enlisted men and cadets stationed at the nearby Army airfield. A 10 week basic ground school and flying program is planned for about 500 cadets with potential growth beyond 600.

Bids Sought for Richland School Cafeteria and Bus Garage
Richland Elementary School district trustees call for bids to build a new cafeteria and boiler room on Richland school grounds off Shafter Highway. The 48 by 96 foot facility will include a modern kitchen and dining space for 300 with outdoor seating for 200 to 250, plus a community-use hall and acoustics. Construction to start soon, with a new bus garage planned for summer.

Army Air Corps Plans Auxiliary Fields in District

Experiment Farm Gets New Lab for Cotton Testing
A specialized cotton testing laboratory is being added to the Shafter Experiment Farm. George Harrison announced at a Farm Center meeting that equipment includes an air conditioned lab, fibrograph, euscope, and fibre breaking machine. The California Planting Cotton Seed Distributors will fund operations.

Construction proceeds on the eastern end of the airfield near Shafter with barracks and other buildings being painted and lumber cut. Over 425 workers are on site as crews push to begin flying operations by mid July. Runways not started yet though grade stakes are in place. An extra 241000 funds tracks to house 150 flying cadets. A sewage plant contract was awarded to Fred J Farley Jr of San Francisco for 60637 dollars.
