Girl Scouts will sell commemorative poppies on Shafter streets Saturday as part of the national Poppy Day. Local arrangements are led by Mrs. Glenn O Nay, who urges veterans and citizens to wear the flower and give to help disabled veterans, families and children affected by World War I.
The Shafter Mercantile Co secures the Frigidaire agency, claimed by makers as the world’s most popular electric refrigerator. The machine is on display at the Mercantile store with prompt deliveries on easy terms.
The Richland grammar school will graduate a class of 85 at the school auditorium next Thursday evening, May 28. A graduation class party was held at Legion Hall last Friday evening with ice cream and cake after a varied entertainment program.
The season’s formal opening of Kern River park drew an estimated 12 000 visitors on Sunday. Attendees joined in the opening festivities and participated in celebratory activities.
Shafter High School presented a comprehensive open house with exhibits from the agricultural shop and home economics classes, a fashion parade, orchestra, and commercial work. More than 800 visitors toured departments, seeing academics, trades, and practical projects, proving the school aims beyond athletics.
Faster passenger service between Shafter and San Francisco now has a 7 13 a m southbound arrival replacing 8 28 a m. The northbound train departs Shafter at 12 20 p m and reaches San Francisco at 8 50 p m down from 10 p m. A second northbound leaves Shafter at 9 46 p m and arrives in San Francisco at 8 50 a m, same arrival time as before.
Three and a half acres of high school property used for a Future Farmers of America potato crop produced a gross of 1025 and a net just over 800. Lachenmaier Brothers bought the crop, ninety percent graded No 1. Project directed by Glenn O Nay and Walter Emrick with proceeds funding future initiatives.
Shafter defeated McFarland 11 to 10 in a tense Tuesday game. Pitchers Ralph Lachenmaier and Huston Sapp starred with Lachenmaier starting and hitting a homer to seal the win as Sapp closed out the late rally with six strikeouts.
Kern County alfalfa acreage has risen from 380 000 acres in 1931 to 35 000 acres in 1936 as per Agricultural Commissioner L A Burtch. Enhanced hay quality and better prices have boosted demand, placing Kern County hay in competition with Lancaster and Imperial Valley.
California Taxpayers Association released estimates showing Kerney population at 97,289, up 18.4 percent over the past five years. The figures reflect ongoing county growth and fiscal planning implications for local services.
Kern Academy holds graduation exercises at 7 30 p m. Senior class includes Walter Baerg Ervin Duerksen Velda Wall and Francis Harrel. Eighth grade graduates include Luella Schneider Verna Ebel Hattie Toews Gordon Ohm Wilbur Ratzlaff Marvin Spady and Clifford Spanyszky. Elder John Baerg delivers the address and diplomas are presented by Professor Hayes A Davis.
Shafter High School honors ten students at a Friday meeting. The program featured Milton Koop and W B White explaining the award system, with Glenn O Nay presenting trophies to project winners from Kern Kings and Tulare counties. Recipients include Theodore Collins Harold Pedersen Bill Shultz Walker Fry Edna Boese Johnny Penner and others for cotton dairy potatoes music and leadership. Richard Gribble won the tennis title and Marvin Neuman earned a prize for a prize winning chicken house.
The Agricultural Conservation Program community committee will hold an all day session at the American Legion Hall in Shafter tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Farmers should bring their worksheets. filling them out carries no obligation but no payments will be made to those who have not completed them. Assistant County Agent N. D. Hudson notes the process.
A father son fellowship dinner drew over a hundred dads and boys at Shafter High School. E P Jones chaired the event, and Leonard Dahlquist gave the keynote on character for the future. County and local Y M C A leaders were introduced and urged ongoing support.
Potatoes shipments slowed slightly with 63 cars on Tuesday including 9 onions, bringing season totals to 860 potato cars and 103 onion cars. Wednesday’s figures were incomplete but expected at about 65 potato cars and five onions. Despite the dip, demand stays good and prices are encouraging, signaling a profitable Shafter potato season. The week’s U.S. shipments ran just over half a day’s national consumption, suggesting a firm market for some time.
Judge T N Harvey president of the Kern County Union High School District addressed the Wednesday graduation class. He outlined opportunities in professional fields and the training required. He described Bakersfield Junior College ties and invited seniors to use the local institution. He then toured the high school and praised its activities and development.
Shafter Congregationalists plan their annual joint picnic with Wasco at Kern River Park next Sunday. A song service led by Mrs. J. W. Porterfield will precede a picnic dinner. Attendees meet at the Shafter church at 9 30 a m.
