City of Shafter Honored At CAP Dinner Banquet
Nearly 300 Kern County residents attended the Partnership annual Celebrating Communication Action Awards Banquet on May 14 2004 at the Double Tree Hotel. Shafter received one of four awards for opening the Shafter Youth Center and donating land and 249000 in city funds to upgrade the facility. The new center spans about 11000 square feet with gym classrooms a kitchen and offices. Executive Director David Bradley of the National Community Action Foundation delivered the keynote praising poverty programs. The event honored Clifford and Bradford Insurance Keith Fultz and Pete Parra for their community service and support of regional development. The Kern Community Action Partnership traces its roots to 1964 and works to reduce poverty through cooperation and resources.

Shafter Police Urge Vigilance On Prom Night Underage Drinking
The Shafter Police Department warns parents to closely guard teens near prom and graduation events to prevent alcohol fueled accidents. Officers will enforce a no tolerance stance on underage drinking and driving and will help get youths home safely. Parents can volunteer to drive students and should call 746-6341 to join a driving list. Also addressed are complaints about parking on front lawns and related hazards, with enforcement of city ordinances to protect lawns and reduce hazardous material runoffs.

Ride for Life motorcycle fundraiser for MDA Kern County
The 19th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association event gathers Harley riders from across the country on Saturday May 22 2004. Riders depart Harley-Davidson Bakersfield at 10 a.m. and return to Crystal Palace by 12 30 p.m. Tickets 40 include T shirt pin lunch and one poker hand. Proceeds fund MDA programs.
