Two Shafter Students Win High Honors and Scholarships

Shafter High School seniors Donald Nikkel and Lawrence Dean garner National Merit recognition and scholarships. Nikkel is a National Merit Finalist with Stanford and school leader honor. Dean earns Regents Scholarship and UC Berkeley entrance honors. Baccalaureate is June 4 and commencement June 8.

Retiring Richland Teacher To Be Honored At Banquet

The Richland community honors Ruth McMillan, a Richland District teacher since 1952, at the Annual Community Achievement Banquet on May 18 at Richland Cafeteria. She plans to teach her final class this June and continues active in school and civic affairs.

Flag Burning Is Scheduled Wednesday

The public is invited to a flag burning ceremony on Wednesday morning May 17 at 8 30 a m at the high school football field. Sponsored by Leslie L Robinson Post No 215 American Legion the event disposes of used flags with proper ceremony.

Crawford Named Assistant County School Superintendent

Bruce Crawford a Kern County native with a long teaching and administrative career is appointed Assistant Superintendent of County Schools. He leaves 17 years as Richland District superintendent to lead the county education division replacing retiring Dr Eloy McGovern.

Resignation of Bill Silverberg Official at Shafter

Blood Bank Scheduled at Memorial Hall in Shafter

A public blood bank will be held Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Shafter. Commander Bill Banks of the Shafter American Legion announced the event and said the blood supply is used up quickly. Those needing blood should contact Commander Banks or Mrs. Evelyn Agee.

Richland Board Studies New Music Building Plan

The Richland Board of Trustees began an inquiry into costs for a new music and possibly office complex on the Richland grounds to replace the old music building. Estimates range from 120000 to 250000 with future rent options discussed if suitable quarters are found. The board plans a tour of area facilities next Thursday and may view preliminary building plans.

Class of 1947 Reunion Weekend Planned

The Class of 1947 from Shafter High School holds a 20th reunion this weekend with a 4 to 6 p.m. happy hour at George Cooper residence, campus tours 6 to 7 p.m., and a 7 p.m. dinner in the cafeteria followed by program. A picnic is set for Sunday at Manuel Park at 1:30 p.m. Committee members include Victor Bender, Robert Peters, Dave Anderson, George Cooper, Calvin Goehring, Greg Ohanneson, Fred oo, and Robert Pozn.

Richland Pool Reopens After Renovation at District Cost

At the Board of Trustees meeting, Superintendent Crawford announced the Richland Pool project is complete and ready Monday. The pool was renovated and repaired at a district cost exceeding $5,000, with hopes no further trouble would arise.
