Siemens, Richland Elementary and Wasco High alumnus, earned a Berkeley doctorate in school administration in 1939 and later led Humboldt State College. Julia Potter Reported at Mercy Hospital After Accident

Julia Potter is in Mercy hospital after a rain storm car wreck in which she rode with her son. She is in a wheelchair and convalescing following the crash.

Crawford Elected Head of Fraternity at Bakersfield

Bruce Crawford retired Richland School superintendent was elected president of the county chapter of Alpha Rho Education Fraternity. Dr E David Cooke, Crawford's Richland successor, was chosen treasurer and Eyron Barber deputy superintendent among initiates. Dr H B Cooper will speak at Shafter Kiwanis luncheon.

Shafter Utility District Acts on Merger and Well Plan

The Shafter Public Utility District board moves to merge with the city and file an LAFCO application. A six inch water main from the school, a 150 horsepower motor, and a 1100 GPM flow are planned for a new well near Fresno Avenue with hearings scheduled. The district will bid on motor and well work and considers cooperation with the South Shafter Colony on sewer connections.

Colorful Turtle Picked Up by Police in East Orange

The East Orange police report a stray turtle found in the neighborhood and cared for on the police station lawn. The painted back indicates it was recently cared for by someone. Police offer custody to the rightful owners.

Bids Sought for County Road Resurfacing Projects

State bidders are invited for resurfacing and seal coat work on multiple Kern County routes. Projects include Route 65 0.3 mile north of Lerdo Highway to Tulare County line, Route 178 segments near Route 184 and Sequoia National Forest, Route 184 Weedpatch to Lamont, Route 223 between Route 99 and Arvin, and Route 14 about 19.5 miles north of Mojave from 1.5 miles south to Red Rock Randsburg Road.

Pole Vault Record at West Coast Relays Threatened

Larry Tuck, who set 13 feet 9.5 inches at the 1966 West Coast Relays, faces possible loss of his mark as the May Fresno event looms. Larry McGough, Edison, has reached 14 feet 2.5 inches this year and Pat Kelly begins his 41st year officiating at the meet, a longevity record.

Wasco to Celebrate Sixty Years with May Fest Activities

Wasco gears up for its 60th anniversary celebration May 12 and 13 with events including an oldtimers breakfast Miss Wasco contest teenage dance parade rodeo and western dance. Sweepstakes Ribbons Won By Local Artists

Laura Hare earned the sweepstakes ribbon in the adult amateur division for Verdant Valley at the Kern County Art Festival finals held at the Cunningham Memorial Art Gallery in Bakersfield. Shafter High School student Mike Thompson won the sweepstakes ribbon in the high school division.

Methodist Church 1st Anniversary Celebration May 14

Shafter celebrates the first anniversary of its Methodist church with a morning sermon by Bishop Donald Harvey Tippett of San Francisco at 11 o clock. A light lunch follows. Public viewing of art from the Kern County Finals runs at Cunningham Gallery, Bakersfield, daily 1:30 to 4:30 except Monday through May 28.

SPUD Merger Debate Moves Toward City PUD

Mayor Allen Zenk urges residents to engage in the SPUD merger issue as a Public Utilities District resolution advances. The council gave no comment, planning discussion at the next meeting and inviting citizen involvement and information.
