Five Shafter youths sent to California Youth Authority
Five boys aged 13 to 17 from Shafter were committed to California Youth Authority schools after admitting to stealing four new cars breaking into two schools and several businesses. They will go to Norwalk for case study and then to state schools until parole likely to age 21. Three are brothers and they were arrested April 25 after a high speed chase following a statewide bulletin.

Burglars Damage Richland Primary School Offices
Kenneth Pipkin, a school custodian, reported that burglars broke into Richland Primary during the weekend and damaged about $600 worth of office furniture. They jimmied a window in the administration building, rifled desks and a file cabinet, finding little cash. Pipkin said most cash is kept elsewhere and most damage is insured.

Shafter City Council approved annexation of a $600,000 Jost and Neuman subdivision near the eastern edge of the city. Construction to begin June 13, five houses at a time, with 1200 square foot lots and planned one quarter baths. Police reserves aided in recovering a stolen car and detaining two 16 year old girls from Ogden, Utah involved in the thefts.

District Buys New School Bus

Final preparations for Shafter High School’s Senior Carnival on Friday May 18 are led by Jim Banks senior class president. Booths include cake walks goodie trails egg throws and a marriage booth with prizes and materials coordinated by committees led by Joe Borton and Ed Ellis. Clubs must clean up after their booths with a $5 fine for delays. 25 percent of booth net profits go to the sponsoring senior class. the best appearance winner is exempt from the share. Boom Burns Worker When Hay Loader Touches Power Line
Judson B. Allsup of 87 Spree White Lane suffered severe arm and leg burns after a hay loader boom touched a power line southeast of Shafter. He was rushed to Kern General Hospital in Bakersfield in serious condition. Allsup worked for Carson Maynard Truckers of Greenville. The accident occurred on the Davis ranch near Wildwood School.
