Harvest of the 1956 California White Long potatoes in the Shafter-Wasco area to begin Monday. Growers report favorable markets near 3 dollars per cwt, with digging possibly delayed by rain. Shipped examples noted from W B Camp and D W Ferguson.

The Richland PTA hosts a parent education class on May 15 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. A new film Those Who Dare to Teach will premiere with a panel including Mrs teaser beehone, Mrs Mildred principal tea teacher, and Mrs Frank Roselle. Mothers with children ready for kindergarten or nursery school-age are especially invited.
Kindergarten registration will be held at Richland Primary School on May 18. Parents should bring child’s birth certificate and immunization records.
The 1956 South Sequoia League spring meet will be at Richland Aquatic Center Friday at 3 p.m. with Shafter Wasco Exeter teams competing in three classifications. Shafter’s Carol Witcher Norma Mixon LaRae Pilgrim and Allene Anderson are favored. Lloyd Nanney leads the boys as standout diver with teammates Gervis Robey Jim Nixon Glenn Putman Orville Pearson Jerry Heiser under coach Dennis Foreman.
Shafter volunteers wrap up Cancer Control month reporting 2389.07 dollars raised, nearly double the 1250 dollar goal. Mrs. Leland Bell urged residents to contribute, highlighting early detection and research funding as key aims of the drive.
City which lies in the heart of the cotton region declares May 14 to May 19 as National Cotton Week. Mayor Kirschenmann of Shafter affirms the agricultural ties and proceeds share for the period.
Funeral services were held at Eben ezer church in Shafter for 97 year old Heinrich Stoller who died May 3 in Galt California. The service was led by Rev. Walter Grossman with interment in Shafter. He lived in Shafter 22 years, was a farmer, and a member of Eben Siele. Survived by his widow and a large extended family including children in Shafter Bakersfield Menno Freeman and Tripp South Dakota. Pallbearers named from the local community. Armstong mortuary handled arrangements.
Last services for Elder Daniel Isaac 84 of 18250 Thomas Lane will be held at 10 am Tuesday at the Seventh Day Adventist church. He died May 4 at home and will be interred at Shafter cemetery. Isaac, a retired missionary, came to this country from Russia with his parents in 1873 at age two. He later returned to Russia.
Pat Kelly representative to the state legislature will be principal speaker at a community court of honor for boy scouts Jane Ist. Kelly will present the life scout awards. Tenderfoot investiture awards will be made by Ben Steele scoutmaster of troop 959. Second class awards William Ss. Raab Jr Rio Bravo teacher of the Maple troop. Boys from Shafter Rio Bravo Maple and Minter Field work on rank advancement and merit badges for this court of honor.
129 students earned honor roll status with a B average or higher at Shafter High during the second six week grading period of the spring semester. Mrs. Amelia Cornell, dean of reports, notes Tatum and Jack Robbins among those uplifted to honor roll. The list includes many named students such as Richard Redla Henry Badgett Sam Baker Shirley Barber Carol Barton Gerald Bender Eileen Bradshaw Bruce Branner Adele Carrera and others.
Shafter High School plans Blue and Gold Day with 39 students visiting 33 downtown businesses on Friday May 11 to interview workers and learn job duties, attire, and scheduling for the following day May 12.
More than 600 hotrod enthusiasts from across the United States are expected for the first National drag races on the West Coast at Minter Field May 12 and 13. Promoter Gene Howe of Bakersfield announced the event, with proceeds running from 9 am until late afternoon. National quarter mile holder Jim Nelson of Culver City plans to compete, having run 9.1 seconds at 153.91 mph.
Mary Partain and Sandra McMichael, both pianists, received music scholarships at the Richland PTA Music Scholarship tryouts. Sponsored by Shafter Wasco Ginning Co, the awards support fifth to seventh grade study with two $972 scholarships awarded annually for music and teacher expenses. Honorable mentions went to Dale Nickle and Carolyn Smith.
The Shafter High School PTA annual barbecue raised 1172.70 with net proceeds about 650. Harlin P. Wilson, the event chair, said funds support the PTA scholarship fund and high school clubs. Prizes went to Kenneth Pipkin for 100 tickets and Elma Wilson for 80 tickets. Central Market supplied part of the food free.
A bid of 2.805 million dollars from R B Lloyd of Coachella for SWID unit one work was the lowest of five but higher than engineers’ estimate by about 166 thousand. The board asked the U S Bureau of Reclamation to analyze costs to see if funds remain to finish the project north of Merced Avenue on the Wasco side supplying water from the Friant Kern canal to Wasco and Shafter.
The Shafter Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture will enter a float in the Wasco parade Saturday morning. Float decor is blue and gold on white, carrying six high school beauties who are candidates or queen of the senior carnival on Friday May 18. Named are Bonnie Johnson, Jean Thomas, Joan Eckmann, Sally Firkens, Carol Witcher and Linda Robey.
Funeral services for 77 year old Mrs. Minnie Ida Akins were held Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home in Yuma Arizona. She died April 27 at home and had lived in California 38 years and Bakersfield 18. Her husband preceded her in death in 1949. She was born in Murphysboro Illinois.
The Wasco Bears Shafter game with Garces was postponed Wednesday due to wet grounds. Coach Gaye Pare reports no date set for the playoff and the league title may be cancelled. An overtime surge pushed Wasco to lead, with Wasco scoring three runs early and finishing 7-5 in the eighth inning.
Voters go to Richland and Lerdo May 18 for school board elections. Incumbents Harold Greene and Mrs. Cosmo Thomas face Dr. Henry H. Loewen. Neil Peters runs unopposed at Lerdo to replace Clyde Boughton. Polls 7 AM to 7 PM at Richland, 2 PM to 6 PM at Lerdo and Maple. Ballots include Kern County union high and college district, and county board of education. Election officers listed.
