Scholastic achievement awards program honors local students
The 34th Annual Scholastic Achievement Awards Program, themed America’s Heritage Freedom Education and Opportunity, drew about 250 attendees at the Vet’s Hall in Shafter. Kiwanis cooked tri tips and Soroptimists served while Laurel Harris led the flag salute and Pat Jones hosted.

Shafter Woman Pleads No Contest In Fatal Collision
Stephanie Rodriguez 30 of Shafter pleaded no contest to misdemeanor hit and run and vehicular manslaughter in the death of Dana Hilderbrand 22 of Bakersfield. She also pleaded no contest to driving without insurance and driving on a suspended license. A judge ruled the case did not merit felony charges though the district attorney sought them.

CVH Students Donate Clothes to Richland Primary
Central Valley High students crafted children garments as a class project and added them to a nurse's closet at Richland Primary on May 8. The line includes overalls and a surfer print shirt, with fabric donated by church members. CVH invites fabric contributors.

Richland Junior High hosts Academic Fiesta Dinner and awards
Richland Junior High holds its second annual Academic Fiesta Dinner Thursday May 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the cafeteria with a 5 to 7:30 p.m. barbecue, an 8 p.m. scholarship award in the music room, and entertainment by the Richland Band Choir and Cinco de Mayo Dancers. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children at the door.
