Shafter approves moderate risk water plan with 45 percent rate hike
The Shafter City Council approved a moderate risk water system upgrade by a 4-1 vote. The plan includes a 1.5 million gallon storage tank and potential two well head carbon treatment plants if needed, aiming for a lower initial rate but risking future sharp increases if wells become contaminated. Council Engineer John Guinn supported the plan while critics warned of higher costs and crisis management implications.
