Citizens on the common school board, often merchants or ranchers, devote many hours to running local schools. Their steady work underpins educational progress and reflects the American ideal of public duty at home.
About 300 civic organizations mounted groups and schools in Shafter and Central and Southern California are invited to join the Shafter Potato Festival parade on Saturday June 12 at 10 45 AM. Parade divisions include mounted groups marching groups service clubs bands and open entries with trophies for top three in each division. A swimming meet is planned for festival day with races for all ages and medals for top finishers.
Richland and Maple Grade Schools announce graduation exercises on May 20 with programs on school grounds and in the Maple School Auditorium. Richland events include band music, speeches by Helen Warkentin and John Lytle, and diploma presentations by Principal Fred Hasty and Board Chairman Rolf Jacobsen. Maple School lists twelve graduates and a detailed evening program led by Rev. Erwin Rohfield, with band, choirs, solos, and diploma awards.
Police booked five individuals since Monday on drunkenness or vagrancy charges as potato season peaks. Richard , 20, and his wife Bessie, both colored, were jailed for 120 days with 60 suspended for two years. Clement Churchill, 36, of Shafter from Oklahoma, received 90 days suspended for two years. Fred Smith, 30 days in jail with hospital treatment recommended. Bernice Lee Kelly, 32, arrested for drunkenness, fined 25 dollars and 30 days suspended for two years.
A May 5 complaint led Shafter Police at 6 pm to pursue Lloyd W. Brooks who had attempted fictitious checks. By 8 pm he was located and identified, with handoff planned to Las Vegas and Visalia. the 1942 case noted the desk man's alertness aided the arrest.
Kern County supervisors ordered a grand jury investigation into the county park concessions and fairgrounds. County Superintendent Percy Branson asked for the inquiry to clear rumors about the parks department while Salzer and Woollomes clash over campaign attacks.
The Wednesday Afternoon Club will install new officers at Cawelo on Friday May 21 with a 1 00 PM luncheon. Reservations end at noon Tuesday May 18 and can be made by calling Mrs. Wm Lowe 5042 Mrs J W Lassiter 4602 or Mrs William Bender 4842.
Tonight on the Shafter High football field a senior carnival features a variety show by the Horizon Club, concessions, games, and a carnival queen contest. Proceeds support student activities with 25 percent funding a senior banquet. free admission with five cent tickets for booths and games.
At the Shafter 20 30 Club meeting in Cawelo, Harry Blumkin and Kenneth Howell were nominated for president for the coming six month term. Ed DeMello and Marvin Lane were named first vice president, Cecil Rhoads and Marvin Weidenbach second vice presidents, with four directors elected to fill vacancies. Dr Nicolai Riloff spoke as the evenings guest. A barbecue picnic is set for Sunday May 16 at Channeson's Kimberlina Ranch park three miles north of Cawelo on Highway 99. Kenneth Howell chairs barbecue arrangements.
Wage rates paid by Kern County potato growers are running about the same as last year. One hundred pound sack for binding yields 12c. Hourly wages range from 70c to 80c. Throughout the valley, 60c.
Memorial Poppy Day events in Shafter honor veterans. Poppies arriving Friday and Saturday May 22 are produced by disabled veterans in California under the Auxiliary supervision. Veterans earn money through poppy making and send support to families during wartime relief efforts.
City Council on Monday night ordered local slot machine operators to ensure no machine pays off in cash, must follow state law and county ordinance, and be restricted to free games only for players under 21. Permits renewal to rely on compliance by July 1. failure to pay out cash likely ends renewals. A jail fence proposal and business permits for dressmaking home operation were also discussed as mayor and councilmen presided before a large crowd.
Week-end guests of Jessie McClain included Mr and Mrs D H Ao e and Nell You of Los Angeles along with Mrs Shadle and Mrs Charles Delmar of Alameda. On Sunday the entire McClain family gathered for a family dinner.
The Potato Festival Queen contest requires entry blanks and a full length photo submitted to the Potato Festival Committee or Dr. Revells' office. Open to single girls aged 16 to 24 within five miles of Shafter. Final date not extended. blanks printed in the Shafter Press.
With rail strike off, Shafter's 1948 potato season gains pace. Forty five cars billed out on Wednesday and 174 cars left for the Eastern market by Wednesday night. Prices around U S no 11 grade, demand modest. No car shortage seen. 520 empties held on Shafter railyards as shipments expected to resume next week.
