Poppy Day Observance Planned for May 21 and 22
Mrs. Phil Horwith of the local American Legion Auxiliary announced Poppy Day preparations for Friday and Saturday May 21 and 22. She traced the poppy as memorial flower to World War I and Colonel John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields poem, noting its adoption by the American Legion in 1920 and the poppy’s public distribution beginnings in New York City in 1918 and Milwaukee in 1919.
