May Festival Promises Big Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival
The May Festival in Shafter celebrates Agricultural Paradise with a full Saturday schedule. Co-directors Doug and Linda Gragg promise a top event featuring a parade, barbecue, cow-chip tossing, Scout pancake breakfast, 5k and 10k runs, and a host of activities at Manuel Park. Grand marshal Fred Starrh, longtime local farmer, will lead the parade. The day includes entertainment, Model T races, hot air balloon rides, and a late-evening Lions Club barn dance with the 100 Proof Band. Families are invited to enjoy booths, rides, and crafts, with free fingerprinting for kids and various community groups participating.

Officials discuss annexation at Shafter Minter Field joint meeting
A special joint meeting of the Shafter City Council and Minter Field Airport District reviewed annexation plans. City Manager Wade McKinney said the annexation paperwork is filed with LAFCO and the process may take three to four months. If approved, Shafter would grow from 2.1 to 9.4 square miles.
