Shafter May Festival History Ties To Valley Roots
Shafter’s rich ties to the San Joaquin Valley unfold from its 1898 Santa Fe line to 1913 land deals by Kern County Land Co. Generals and settlers shaped the town, with Jastro naming Shafter after Gen William Rufus Shafter. Mennonite colonies, early farms, and the Green Hotel era reveal a community built around orchards, vineyards, and a fledgling depot.
