Richland School Board election set for May 21

The Richland School Board will hold a May 21 election with two separate ballots for two short term seats and one regular three year term. Incumbent Leonard Gaede faces D Handel for the regular vacancy, while Clarence Neuman Harold Greene and J C Atkinson compete for the two new seats. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm in the Music Room at Richland Elementary School.

Bob Ross to Headline Shafter Cotton Festival Show

Bob Ross will headline the Shafter Potato and Cotton Festival as a major entertainment highlight. He recently closed a engagement at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and has appeared on multiple television shows. Ross toured Korea and performed in Europe with a vaudeville act.

Shafter City Hall Dedication Slated

A dedication ceremony for the new Shafter City Hall is planned for 1 p.m. on May 27. Assemblyman Pat Celly and the Richland and Shafter High School bands will participate, with organizing remarks by Lou Woodard for the Shafter Chamber of Commerce.

Pre registration of Kindergarten Youths Urged

Richland Primary School in Shafter calls for kindergarten pre registration on May 19 and 20. Principal Mrs Letha Brock will sign up eligible children ages four and up between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Lerdo and Wall Streets corner. If unavailable, call Shafter 365 to arrange.

High School to Honor Past Graduates on Friday Night

Shafter High School hosts an open house titled The Gold Old Days to honor first graduating class alumni. Displays include yearbooks, athletic trophies, papers, and records. science labs show old and new methods. drama, puppets, and radio performances run alongside shop displays. An agricultural beef preview at 2 PM precedes the 6:15 cafeteria dinner and 8:30 gym program.

Ag Man of the Year Honors California Pioneering Agriculturist

California agronomy pioneer C A Camp was named Ag Man of the Year by Shafter Potato n Cotton Festival officials. Born in 1894 in South Carolina, Camp introduced Acala cotton to California and led the Shafter Experimental Cotton Station. He advanced fertilization for potatoes, expanding cultivation east of the tracks and elevating the state’s crop status.

Vignolo Mare Wins Phoenix Championship

C J Vignolo's five year old sad die mare Heavenly Daze won the five gaited championship at the Phoenix Charity Horse Show three weeks ago. Hube Young rode the mare in the $500 champion stakes event. Young trains at the Vignolo stable in Pomona. Star Reward won the novice three gaited class. Bob Vignolo placed fourth in the American Medal Class. Susan won second in the up to 15 years horsemanship class. Future shows include Santa Barbara International and Pan Pacific Auditorium in LA.

Lions Club Elects Burley Dooley President

Lion's Select Burley Dooley was elected president at the club meeting last Wednesday. Installation will occur in June, with Kenneth Pipkin named 1st vice president, Harry Blumkin 2nd vice president, Lou Carrol secretary, Dick Larson treasurer, Tommy Tucker tail twister, and O D Handel and J W Sanderson as two year directors.

Reuben Mettler To Address Open House

Shafter High School honors 1941 graduate Reuben F. Mettler with an open house talk on Electronics in Aviation. Mettler, associate division director at Hughes Aircraft Culver City, will discuss aviation tech and national defense links in simple terms. He pursued Stanford Caltech Navy service and radar work, including Bikini tests, before joining Hughes in 1949.

Potato Cotton Festival Pageant Full Dress Rehearsal

Preparations for the Potato Cotton Festival Pageant involve over 200 Shafter School children this week. Ken Fahsbender and Grant Jensen plan and produce the Friday night program at Shafter High School ahead of the gala. Miss Jeanette Wheeler's English class will perform in tableau scenes while a Richland school choir and high school musical groups provide musical settings for the Shafter Salutes themed event. The crowning of the festival queen is a main highlight.

Best Annual Festival Parade Nears With 80 Entries

Shafter Festival Parade Entries and Events Planned

Entries from the Shafter Trail Riders and Bakersfield riders join officials from Kern County boards and city council for parade float and trophy sponsors. The festival features a historical pageant by Shafter High School and a queen’s reception, with Kiddie Rides, exhibits, and a late night dance by the Shafter American Legion post.
