Roy Farrell announces summer recreation league teams across four classes. Low Pee-Wee features Racong Vines American Legion Maple Leaf Coberly est L A Camp with players 10 and under. Pee-Wee includes Shafter Lions Woodland Motors String hams Drug Shamrock Cleaners Max Berry s Service Arrow Furniture and Baptist Church for ages 12 and under. Exhibitions May 27 precede the regular season. Junior division lists Central Hardware Baptist Church Maple Leaf Industries B B I and Al s Asociated Smith s Garage for those over 12. Men's division teams come from Rio Bravo North Carp Wasco and two from Buttonwillow.
In the Shafter District the sheriff and Deputy Robert Herredia arrested local boys aged 16 to 20 in a string of petty thefts. The items stolen included three sheep fueling gas and clothing.
Shafter Seventh Day Adventist Church members voice united disapproval of the World Calendar promoted by the World Calendar Association. A church vote adopted a resolution urging the U N to withhold consent and appealing to Henry Cabot Lodge Jr John Foster Dulles and President Eisenhower to oppose adoption. The pastor warned the calendar would disrupt Sabbaths by shifting sacred days each year, causing confusion and hardship for observant believers.
Maple School will hold graduation exercises at 8 30 p m on May 27 with Rev Merle Clark pastor Wasco Methodist Church as main speaker The program includes an invocation by Rev C F Umml and performances by the Maple School orchestra mixed chorus and soloists Janice Balzer will deliver the class greeting and receive diplomas Paul Wiebe will award diplomas and attendance certificates The graduating class includes Janice Balzer Sue Brantley Roger Buller Allen Gaede Martha Jane Mitchell Donald P Neufeld Wayne Siemens Marylan Whitfield Louise Warren Raymond The faculty and staff arelisted with grades 1 8 and part time instructors Anthony Besiderio Zanita Scott and others
Five hundred persons including representatives from each graduating class attended Shafter High School Open House Friday night honoring alumni from 1929. Dr. Reuben F. Mettler spoke on aviation electronics, noting pilots’ judgment remains key despite technological advances. Alumni traveled from Washington DC, Los Angeles area, and San Francisco to attend, as teachers P L Arnold and Robert Gates led the event with the school band led by Kenneth Fahsbender. New PTA officers were installed in a flower ceremony.
Diana Mettler, Richland eighth grade, earned second place in the American Legion Auxiliary District finals for upper grades with her Americanism essay. The competition drew participants from Kern and Tulare Counties, and Richland writers nearly swept the top honors. Previously Juanzen Delaney, a Richland fourth grader, won first place in the intermediate category.
Winners of the Potato N Cotton Festival Poster Contest were announced by Mrs. Thomas Wedge. Elias Velarde and Verlin Misener won the grand prize of 10.00 for their entry, beating rivals from Richland Maple Rio Bravo Lerdo. Cruz Carrasco took 5.00 for Richland entries, with Charlotte Ellison and Joan Hamlin sharing 3.00 and Verna Peters earning 3.00.
More than 300 people watched 19 year old JoAnn McKenzie win the Shatter Potato n Cotton Festival queen title at Memorial Hall. The Bakersfield College yell leader topped seven Kern County contenders in a two part program with prizes including travel and cash awards for top ticket sales. Bonnie Bender earned princess honors and a $100 savings bond for selling the most festival tickets. Patsy Bartsche and Vel Smith also received prizes as top sellers and place winners.
High School students present Shafter Salutes a new pageant Friday night at 8 in the gym. More than 150 participants dramatize Shafter's heritage for the Potato Cotton Festival featuring the band, glee clubs, English students and drama club.
Kenneth Cooper a Fresno State College junior business major from Shafter has been chosen for membership in the Arnold Air Society, the upper division AFROTC cadet organization. He serves as treasurer of Phi Sigma Kappa and is the son of Mr and Mrs Cooper.
